I am considering upgrading my Ryzen 3700X, which is currently running on an Asus X470-F gaming motherboard, to either a 5800X or 5900X. Would such an upgrade be worthwhile, or should I wait until AMD releases their AM5 socket?
As a point of reference, I'm running an RTX 3080 at 2560x1440p, and I want to fully utilize the 144 Hz that the monitor allows.

Solution
the 3700X does not fully saturate a 3080 at 1080P nor 1440P...; I'd expect the 5800X or 5900X to fully deliver it's typical 15-20% boost at 1080P, and 10% at 1440P, and the typical 'next to nothing ' at 4K...

If gaming is the main goal, however, the 5800X with it's 8 cores/16 threads would seem to be plenty of cores/threads for the next handful of years...(If you can catch a 5900X at a good price, however, it would certainly seem to delay the need for ever worrying about cores or threads for an extra 2 years!)

What is the GPU usage level while gaming? I would assume a 3080 wouldn't have an issue with 1440p.

It easily reaches the upper 90's to 100%, so it does not appear to be bottlenecked. That said, I am guessing that the 5800X or 5900X would help improve my minimum fps. Is that right?
If it's reaching 100% usage that's pretty much all it can offer. A faster CPU isn't going to take it over 100%, that's just not logical. But a faster CPU will hold it closer to 100% and bring up the minimum framerates.

Hi
We have the same mobo and just upgraded from a 3600x to the 5900x with a 2080 ti,
1440p 165hz monitor.

Have you tried backing off some of the
Game Eye Candy?

Also have you considered your cpu cooler as well ?, to get the Best out of the 5800x or 5900x
Depending on your current cooler it could be another cost as well.
So if a cooler upgrade is needed +processor price you are well in the current pricing of ddr5 ram @ Micro Center.
If price is no problem then Hey Life is Goood!!!

Good Luck and if you want some stats hit me up!!!!!!!!

Im running a 3080 and 3700x with a 1440p 240Hz monitor. The 3700x is definitely the limiting factor in several games. It still does a very good job but there is as much as a 20% extra fps to be had in some games. I’m waiting to see if I can actually get a 5800x3D as an upgrade, I reckon that will squeeze out the extra in most AAA games.

Well
Don't know about Micro Center getting the xd's but they dropped prices across the board on Amd's.

I was waitng myself then saw they will have lower Ghz then M C dropped the 5900x to $399.99 and jumped on 1. And with the news this week of not being overclockable I'm glad I did.
