So I am looking at getting a new pre built PC.
Option 1
Ryzen 5 1400
RX 580 8GB
or option 2
Ryzen 7 1700x
RX 580 8GB.

Everything else about the PC'S are the exact same. I only game, serf the web , listen to music on my PC. I do not do any video editing or work in any way on it . What is better, the 1400 or the 1700x? Is the 1700x worth the extra in price or am I just paying for features on it I will not need or use.
I would like something that will last a few years so if spending a little more on the 1700x now means I get a much longer use out of it then im ok with that. And before anyone says get the 1600 or some other processor these two ( 1400 & 1700x ) are the only ones being offered in the build right now.
Also, does an SSD really make any difference for gaming?
Thanks.

Personally for what you are using the computer for, I'd go in between those 2 cpus and get the 1600, the 1700x is too much for what you are using the machine for and the 1400 a little too low.

The 1600 paired with the rx580 would make a great gaming machine, match it up with a decent b350 board and 16gb of fast ram.

Seanie280672 would go with the 1600 but it is not offered. Im buying a prebuit system and only the 1400 or 1700x are offered.

How much are these systems for sale for and do you know the rest of the specs ? pre-built systems usually rip you off.

Well Option 1 is $1225 and option 2 is $1519.
RX 580 8GB
8gb ram
1tb drive
Link to option 1 http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-5675-gaming-desktop/pd?cs=cappp1&oc=di5675_btsb_s2e&model_id=inspiron-5675-gaming-desktop#overrides=di5675_btsb_s2e:6~AMD580;8~D1T256G

Link to option 2 http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-5675-gaming-desktop/pd?cs=cappp1&oc=di5675_btsb_s2e&model_id=inspiron-5675-gaming-desktop#overrides=di5675_btsb_s2e:6~AMD580;8~D1T256G;146~R7DRJ0T

Or I could go with option 3 thats more expensive, $1617
I7-7700
RX 580 8GB
16GB Ram
2TB hard drive
So I get twice the amount of ram and twice the amount hd but I am not sure how long the i7-7700 will last. I really would like something that will last 4 years or more ( current one has lasted me 7 years ) with maybe just a GPU upgrade in the future.

All prices are in Canadian dollars as I am Canadian EH!

You realize for about $950 ish you could build a way better system than those with 16gb of fast ram, Windows operating System and an SSD as well as a hard drive, you would just have to put it together yourself.

Here's a few recent suggestions

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7ph4TH - with AMD graphics card

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/g6QTf8 - with nVidia Graphics card

You would save yourself $500 - $600 and they would beat the dell systems.

I know I could buy the items cheaper myself but im not very tech savvy and would not know how to even begin putting it together. Also, through the website I can just do payments monthly. Dont have to spend all the money upfront and helps me establish credit.
So given the 3 options for the systems I listed and knowing I just play games and surf the web what one do you think is the best one that will last the longest?
And with the pcpartpicker links you gave me once you turn them into Canadian its very close to what I would be paying through Dell , and some of the items I can not even get here in Canada.

out of all 3 of those, its a toss up between the Intel system and the AMD 1700x,

But in all fairness, they both have their downsides, the AMD system you get only 8gb DDR4 2400mhz, RyZen benefits from faster ram, but I guess this would be upgradable in the future and you could always add an SSD yourself later, the socket itself (AM4) AMD have promised to support for 4-5 years, so as newer CPUs become available, you could also upgrade, they have probably just used a budget motherboard like an A320.

Intel side of things, its a non K CPU (7700 non K edition), so they've probably used a cheap budget socket 1151 motherboard like a B250 or a H270, and 1151 is a pretty fast dying socket, in fact in 2 months time when the next CPU will be released whatever they are calling it "sorry, ive stopped following Intel" its either cannon lake or coffee lake, it will more than likely need a new socket motherboard, so no future CPU's will be available for that system.

Based on that info, and thinking about it, id probably go for the 1700X

Thank you very much for your help.
I already have a 256gb SSD in my current system that I will pull out and put in whatever system I get. I am a little worried about only 8GB for the ryzen system and from everything I have read from PC sites and benchmarks for any of the Ryzen 7 CPU'S they recommend using DDR4 3200 and from what I can tell it's very hard (and expensive) to find DDR4 3200 that works in the Ryzen system. Seems a lot of the high speed ram is not optimized for Ryzen yet. Intel has been around forever and everything is optimized for intel but as you pointed out, the i7-7700 will not be upgradeable without a new motherboard. So go with the old intel thats tried and true and will honestly probably last 4 years if not a little more or go with the new Ryzen and hope it last as long and they optimize things for it better. On the Ryzen side of things it is $400 cheaper then the intel. I think for the gaming I do, 1080P , with a 60Hz monitor either one of these builds will work.
Going to take a day or two to decide. Lets hope I make the right decision, always seem to make the wrong decision.lol
