Question Ryzen 5 2600

Hi everyone

I am planning to upgrade my CPU and MOBO along as required for me around this summer and I see my options would be i5-9400f or ryzen 2600x and I wan't the X model because it is basically pre overclocked and comes with a better cooler so I don't have to spend time and money to overclock the non X model since X model is only 25 dollars more and I would spend same or more on the new cooler if I wanted to clock the non X model.

Anyways my main question is I have 12 gb 2133mhz ddr4 rams and for some reason things I read put me in doubt that ryzen 2600 OC or 2600x performs not good as i5 9400f without extreme expensive rams with 3000mhz is it true ? I saw some fps benchmark with 4.2ghz ryzen 5 2600 compared to i5 9400f (

) but it is with 3000mhz I am afraid I wont get good performance if I upgrade to ryzen with 2133mhz ram.

Ryzen certainly does (or at least, can) benefit from faster memory.
You could still get by with a 2600/X and 2133MHz RAM. I'd try to at least see if you can get it overclocked to 2400-2666MHz though but, most kits sold at 2133MHz are sold that way for a reason - they're poor performing chips, only capable of 2133MHz without substantial additional voltage.

Intel is not as dependent, but there's still additional performance that can be edged out of an Intel chip with faster memory.

What would actually limit you more than anything else, would be the 12GB (assuming 8+4GB), opposed to strict dual channel. If you have 3x4GB for some reason, then running 2x4GB would be a better idea.

They are so close in performance to each other, I would opt for the 2600X just on the basis that the AM4 boards will still be compatible with the upcoming Ryzen 3000 series (and maybe further). Intel changes sockets like I change my socks. And the 1151 has been around for awhile. Longer than I expected.

But to your question on memory speed, I don't know. Slower RAM will have an effect on the i5-9400F as well; albeit maybe not as bad (?). Memory prices are falling. 16G of DDR4 3000 isn't the bank-breaker it used to be. And the 2133 MHz RAM you have now isn't going to be the determing factor probably. The gfx card you match the CPU up with, the screen rez, v.refresh rate of the monitor all play a more important role.

The 9400f and 2600 are very similar, but due to the SMT (12 threads) and overclocking the Ryzen 5 has but I5 lacks, I would go for the Ryzen 5. The Ryzen 5 platform is definitely going to be supported for longer, so that's also a benefit. I would go for a dual channel (2 sticks) 3000mhz or 3200mhz for Ryzen as any less cripples the CPU. The I5 will also perform better with a faster ram kit, but not by much. Id go for at least 2400 or up to 3200 kits with the I5 as 2400 is the same price as 2133 most times and there is not much more performance to be had over 3200, not to mention the massive price hike after 3200.

I checked out some ram comparisons on both CPUs and it looks like they both get 7-10 more fps with 3000-3200mhz ram over 2133mhz so it looks like ryzen is not so ram dependent like intel, just FYI if someone in the future reads this post

You can probably run that 2133 MHz RAM a bit faster if you think you need to. What brand/model is it?

Patriot PSD44G213381 atleast it says on HWinfo I got two of them 4 gb and one Patriot PVE44G240C6GY 4 gb as well.

They're not even a matched set. (important) Your chances of running them at a faster speed just went down. But no harm in trying.

With the i5 9400f, there's no upgrade path without spending more on a new motherboard. I'd get the Ryzen, because you can upgrade later when the new processors come out.
