I'm considering building a gaming PC for my sister as a surprise gift. I have a brand new Ryzen 5 2600 CPU that I purchased back in November of 2019 and haven't done anything with it. Still unopened.

Not planing on doing anything to high end, just something good enough to introduce her to gaming on a PC. I want to say from my Google search that a B450 will pair nicely with this CPU, but I'm not sure.

I plan on building on a Mini-ITX board and going with the Phanteks Evolv Shift 2 Air Mini-ITX Case provide reviews and thermals are good. I really like the look of that case. One other thing, I'm told the included AMD fan that comes with the CPU is great for those doing budget builds. Any thoughts on that?

Solution
You should look out for any B450 chipset motherboard(yes you're right) but you can also look at lower tier boards if you don't want to perform CPU overclocking. Look for a dual channel DDR4-3200MHz ram kit and lastly, a small capacity NVMe SSD for the OS and a larger capacity SSD for her game library. You will still need a discrete GPU, so that might be the only part in your list that might be the most expensive.

Please stay away from that Phanteks case. That case is meant for air cooling only and an AIO killer. If you want to get something that's vertical, you can look at the SSUPD Meshlicious case or Coolermaster's NR200P Max or the Revolt 3 by iBuyPower. Dunno if NZXT's H1 is back from it's nightmare journey with the recalls...

Oh I almost forgot, I have a GPU brand new in the box, older card just tucked away. MSI GTX 1070 8GB Gaming Z GPU so I'll probably use that card since prices are out of control theses days.

Don't really have a set price just will buy it piece by piece. I typically buy online, Newegg, Amazon sometimes, Best Buy sometimes if they price match the part. I also have a local Micro Center.

I will stay away from the original listed case. Any good budget Mini-ITX gaming motherboards recommendations?

....
That will be a good card for gaming at 1080p.

I second the choice of going for a B450 board. The good thing about going with B450 for a 2600 is it's a platform with a lot of upgrade potential should the urge arise as both 3000 and 5000 series CPU's work on them in addition to 2000 series.

The thing about mini-ITX is 'budget' should never be used along with it :). The reason is they have to use high-end components to fit in tiny packages, especially in the VRM to reduce thermals. A good one to consider is MSI B450i Gaming Plus MAX. Better is Asus ROG Strix B450-i Gaming, but that's probably straying a bit further out of 'budget'.

Good to know about the 3000 and 5000 series CPU's!. Yeah thinking about that after posting this I wonder if I should just build on an ATX. There is just more options and in general, just easier to build with.

In addition to that, I really like the design of the Fractal Meshify White cases. Gamer's Nexus did a good review of the Meshify C and it did extremely well in thermals with upgraded fans. Not as good mind you as the Cooler Master Mastercase H500 I'm using in my high end build, but very well and the case is aesthetically pleasing. While this will just be an entry budget build, I can't help myself so I will be adding ARGB fans!.

As far as ATX motherboards are concerned, some of these are listed in a Google search for recommended budget boards.

MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON MAX WIFI AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard

https://www.newegg.com/msi-b450-gam...HZy55hfKLSazj70OXIMaAqChEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

In the past I've read about Vram issues on MSI motherboards. This one has built in WiFi.

GIGABYTE B450 AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0) AM4 AMD B450 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD Motherboard

Another budget option with WiFi.

Let's say a motherboard doesn't include WiFi, one could add a WiFi card to the available PCIe slot below the GPU correct?

Most likely...but you have to watch for 'lane stealing' when you attach drives to some SATA ports or add a second NVME drive. It depends very much on the particular motherboard.
