Question ryzen 5 3600 speed issue

Hi,

Just installed a ryzen 5 3600, its base speed is apparently 3.6 GHz, but it's usually running close to 4.0. I haven't changed anything and never overclocked in my life, not sure if this is something that's supposed to be happening. Shouldn't its speed be capped at 3.6 even though it's called "base speed"? I have a stock cooler and really wouldn't want to burn the cpu. I don't want to overclock either.

Here it shows base speed is 3.6 but runs at 3.98. It sometimes goes a bit beyond 4.

Thanks in advance for the input.

I would use Ryzen Master to monitor your CPU and as long as the voltage and temperatures aren't too high you are most likely just fine.

thank you, got it as well.
could you please check if this looks ok? I'm new to amd and processors in general, I have no clue what to look for and got not time today to actually learn by myself. I just want to make sure it's all good.
One important thing I should've noted is that when I upgraded the mbd+cpu today, I did not reinstall windows. When I booted the system it just did new drivers installation on its own and everything looks fine. I've updated the drivers from the first link you sent with the chipset thing.
Really appreciate your help

Personally I always do a clean install of Windows when I upgrade to a new motherboard and CPU.
That just ensures that there are no conflicts with left over drivers, settings, etc. from the old hardware.
If you do a clean install read this first so you can keep your activation:

Also your Ryzen Master readings look fine to me BUT I don't have a Ryzen 3000 series CPU so hopefully someone that does will see this thread and can confirm that they are fine.

PS
Do you have the minimum CPU usage set to 5-20% in the Ryzen Balanced Power Plans Advanced settings ?

Thanks a lot again. I'll not reinstall windows for now, bit lazy and don't want to back up some of the scattered files, but will do it if necessary, so let's see if anyone else answers for now

ok so I played some games and apparently speed doesn't go beyond 4.2 (of course) and cpu temp is 70 max. performance is great, the only concern I have is not to damage my system by this unintentional overclocking (if I may call it that)

This is completely normal boost behavior. The base and boost clocks are kind of meaningless on these CPUs. The CPU will basically run as fast as it can depending on the load and temperature conditions. I've never seen any of the 3 3600's I have run at base clock under any kind of load. Even placing a heavy all core load on the CPU it will run around 4ghz or even higher depending on temps. You can basically turn your 3600 into a 3600x by using the 200mhz auto OC feature. The 3600 seems to be the only CPU this feature actually works effectively on.

Thank you for the info. I'll pass on the OC for now, I've upgraded from a really weak cpu so now I'm just happy. Wanted to make sure this weird spike in speed is nothing wrong. I'll learn more about it for sure, but first need to get a better cooler just in case. It's just weird that it reports default factory settings but still overclocks to 4.1 whenever it wants. Guess I'll just roll with it for now
