I have a build with a ryzen 5 2600 that is great and i use daily. My brother just ordered a ryzen 5 3600x for me for some odd reason (i dont know how big of an upgrade that really is) but id have to update the bios on my asis b450 f motherboard. How do i do that? Also, in doing that whats it going to change?
I have posted some dumb questions to show how clueless i really am about computers, and heres another one...
Thanks (links to exactly what i need to download or do ect. are greatly appreciated). This forum is good at helping idiots like me

Solution
so each one in order. seems kinda redundant why is it done like that?

Because the BIOS chip is only a 16 MB chip and each BIOS version adds some fixes / firmware updates.
Since the BIOS chip is not big enough to hold all the updates at once, each new BIOS version depends on the Previous BIOS having those updates so it can just update the firmware and fixes from the previous version.

You could probably just update to 2301 and then to 2901 BUT there is a risk that it will not work properly.
So spending the extra 20-30 minutes doing them sequentially is well worth it IMO.

My new X470-F has a 32 MB BIOS chip so that sequential updating isn't necessary like it is on my B450-F.

Thanks for the quick reply... Do i d.l. from that link to a usb then boot in bios from usb? Hows that work?
Here is a link for a tutorial since I cba to type it all: https://www.pcworld.com/article/187437/how-to-update-your-bios.html
Also, during your bios update, if you lose power/turn off your pc etc., it will damage your motherboard, causing it to not even boot up. So, don't do this during a storm where you will lose power and don't turn off your pc until it's 100% done lol.

No much difference between the two CPUs.

You could update right from Windows using ASUS EZUpdate tool.
Or you could download the BIOS file to a USB flash drive.
Or updated the BIOS, from within the BIOS if you have internet thru Ethernet cable.
Check your motherboard manual (chapter 3)

I have that same Motherboard with a 2600 on it.
I also used it to test my 3700x before I got an Asus ROG Strix X470-F Gaming.

Do NOT update the BIOS through windows !!!!!!!!!!!!

What BIOS version do you have now ???
Once you tell me what version you currently have I can tell you what BIOS version to flash.
You will need to download the correct BIOS version from here:
And Unzip it to an 8 GB or smaller flash drive that is formatted as FAT16 or FAT32.

Then use the steps listed under "To Update the BIOS by USB:"
from here:
https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1012815

Also Install this chipset version Before you update the BIOS:
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/...546.177871631.1576426109-271724210.1572841502

Then Reboot and Install this one:
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/...297.177871631.1576426109-271724210.1572841502

Then reboot and install this Chipset version:
https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/amd_chipset_software_1.11.22.454.zip

so the BIOS i have currently is 1201 x 64
if i do this bios flash will the processor thats in now continue to work (probably yes thats a dumb question)... that 3600x wont be here till thursday
installing that chipset version? is that something necessary or just some updates to existing stuff like a normal update? (what chipset version do i have now and how do I know?)

Yes the 2600 will work with the newer BIOS versions just not as well as it does with version 1201.

You can check in Settings ... Apps and click on AMD Software and AMD_Chipset_Drivers to see what versions you have:

And updating them with the versions I linked is Necessary so that your BIOS updates work properly.
Asus even states to do it in that order.

Set your BIOS to Optimized Default settings (on the BIOS EXIT tab).
Then save and reboot.
Then Update the BIOS to Version 2301.
then set Optimized Defaults again.
Then save and reboot.

Then do the same for Versions 2605, 2704, 2801 and finally 2901.

That is exactly what I did when I updated from version 1201 to 2901 to test my 3700x and it worked perfectly.

I followed these steps
https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1012152/

I have used several times without issues on a couple of motherboards.
Did you encounter a problem?
I have Not ever updated a BIOS from within Windows because it is 1000x more risky than doing it from a USB stick in the BIOS or from DOS.
I have even gone so far as to extract the BIOS from from OEM BIOS update .exes just so it could be done from DOS.

And I have modified literally thousands of BIOS over the years (on a few different BIOS modding Forums) and I have seen hundreds of people brick their motherboard because they took the lazy route and tried updating the BIOS from Within Windows.

PS
I have also successfully done exactly what sobakowa19 is wanting to do with the Exact same motherboard he has just a few months ago.

LOL,
No Problem.
Look here:
https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/b450

PS
The 3600x is about 20% faster than the 2600 so you should definitely notice the difference in performance once you get it installed.

The difference will not be as much when gaming but if you do any video encoding or streaming you will definitely be able to tell.

Going from my 2600 (OC'd to 4 GHz) to my 3700x made a Huge difference in my encoding times and the general snappiness of my system.

FAN FRIGGIN TASTIC THANK YOU i have 2901 bios running THANKS FOR THE HELP
one last question.... have you done any overclocking on the 3600x? if so what are your settings, voltages ect.

i had that 2600 at 4.1 stable with ram oc'ed to 3600 with core volt at like 1.4, soc at 1.2 and ram bumped i a little... i have a 360 aio which is overkill on the 2600 so maybe can come in handy with that 3600x?

all i have to look forward to now is pulling that all apart which for my dumbass is a strugle ha

Honestly you can just Enable PBO (Power Boost Overdrive) in the BIOS and max out the PBO settings (except the Temperature setting).
Like this:

And Set the Performance Enhancer Setting (on the AI Tweaker page) to level 2 or Level 3 (OC).
And make sure DOCP is enabled for your RAM.
And that is about the best you can do.
Manual OC's don't work very well on Ryzen 3000 CPU's.

I would definitely see if you can OC your RAM once you get the 3600x installed.
RAM OC's will definitely help increase overall Performance.
I bought 3600 RAM and have it OC'd to 3733 with tighter timings on my 3700x rig.

I dont have pbo as an option, is that on the 570 board lol
