Which CPU is better for gaming on max settings ? I won't be using it for anything else. I've done a ton of research but I just can't figure it out, there too many terms that I don't know what they are. I got the impression that more than 8 cores is overkill for gaming. I'll get the most expensive GPU that I can afford, which should the best or 2nd best,(not counting the $3000 ones.)

What resolution / hz are you gaming at?

Shoot for the 5600x, pairs nicely with a high end graphics card, specifically at 1440 / 4k, as you will be GPU bound.

On older games, lower resolutions, you will be CPU bound, so literally the best CPU you can get is going to keep pushing your frames higher.

Is more than 8 cores overkill for gaming ?

At the moment there is very little benefit from anything higher than 6 cores and 12 threads for gaming. If you look at reviews you will see little difference. 8 cores 16 threads already has good headroom.
