I got a gtx 970 founders, ryzen 5 1400, and an msi b350m gaming pro motherboard. When I put them all together I don't get a post. The screen stays black but all the fans spin. But when I plug any of my other gpu's in every thing works fine. The main problem is the gtx 970 works In my old rig. Just plugged it in to test it. I'm so confused plz help.

Solution

I just ran into the SAME issue with a Asrock Fatality x370 K4 and a Ryzen 7 1700. I had 2 Rx 470s in Crossfire and sold them because of the mining craze. I pulled my old EVGA 970 SSC and intended on putting it in this Ryzen build, but the board doesnt even detect the 970. The 970 runs, fans spin, but the board just wont initiate with the 970 in. I thought my 970 went bad, I installed...
maybe far fetched but maybe some kinda bios incompatibility between the motherboards bios and the cards ?? all most what it sounds like

did you try the psu from your old rig to see if there maybe a issue with the new PSU in the new build ??

in the end you would think it was easy plug and play

I'm using the old psu because the old psu is only 3 months old, it's a 650 watt bronze from thermal take. Haven't tried any bios updates so IL try to find the latest one. And everything is plugged in right. I double checked with the mobo manual. IL have to put my gt 640 back into to do the bios updates, I should post back in about 15 minutes

It's not the cpu, Im in windows with the cpu right now. It's just when I use the gtx 970 and ryzen together my pc doesn't work. If I use my gt 640 or 9800gt the pc works fine

Did you connect the power connectors for the 970?
I believe those two other cards don't require power adapters... so maybe you're not attaching them?

you would think if he can make it work correctly with the same PSu in his old build he would know what to do in the new one ???

I looked to see if anyone with that same board has run in to any thing like this with a 900 series card but I don't see anything .. just sure seen like a bios compatibility issue with that 970 and that m,otherboard .

whats crazy is how the older cards work fine but you know that was a thing with the 900 series cards right from the get go with bios compatibility issues with some motherboards like z68 and dell xps 8700 all needed motherboard bios updates to support them cards

look at all the same issues with the latest intel builds never seen so many cards not working . its like support and compatibility has taken a far back seat to hype and gimmicks

thing aint so plug and play anymore and led lighting is now a strong selling point ....lol......

you said it works but just not with that gtx 970 ? you say it works as expected in your old rig with the same PSU ? then you say the new board works with other vid cards ?

to me got to be a bios handshake issue between the new motherboard bios and the cards bios ..

you made sure the 970 was fully seated in the slot ? made sure all the psu pci-e 6/8 pin cables were plugged in connected properly ??

you think if it was a motherboard bios setting like pci slot or on board thing then the other cards would not work as well [should default setting to auto detect anyway / plug and play ]

try the MSi forums and see if you get a answer on that board maybe some one there know a bit more on something ?

just looking over anything I can find like end user reviews I don't see anything on card issues

im tried everything trust me. im contacting msi support now hopefully sometime tomorrow il get some answers. i know for sure i wont be able to sleep tonight tho XD. gonna be trying to find fixes all night.

as others points out it might be BIOS issue. from what i heard AMD somehow rushed things up with motherboard maker (the CPU itself is fine). some of their partner actually complaining that AMD did not give them enough time to sort things out. in their opinion it seems like AMD treating this like how they launch their graphic card; they refuse to give the info early to motherboard maker because they afraid of leak. but the thing is with GPU there is what we call reference design that partner can sell before they finished with their custom solution. given time i think it will be sort out eventually. that's why one of my rule of thumb is try not to get new stuff that just coming out.

Where are the video ports on your older gpus vs 970? Shooting for something really simple with no disrespect as i see you've done just about everything. If the video port you're using on the 970 is too close to the case structure restricting video plug contact?

iv tried multiple ports and there shouldnt be an issue with any of them they all got plenty of room, and in the dvi case which is what im using mostly while trying to fix the problem, it screws right in tight and with no clearance issues.

Have you booted the pc with the case side ways so the gpu is upright? Doubt weight of the card would have anything to do with it just looking at this issue in a physical sense. The gpu locks in properly? Nothing at all blocking the card if it's longer?

How about beep codes do you get any?

I thought my 970 went bad, I installed it in its old i5 rig and it works just fine. I guess for some reason AM4 doesn't like the 970. Maybe an issue with the "gimpped" 4GB Vram/3.5GB VRAM?

Solution
Guys, I have the same issue. My built: Asrock X370 Killer/ac + Ryzen 7 1700 + GTX970hof. When I put the second vga (old 9600GT) the PCIe link goes down to x8 (GTX970 work at x8 pcie 3.0 and 9600GT gets x8 2.0). After that all system Works fine. I guess the issue is related whith pci express linkwidth on ryzen.
