Ryzen 5 Build Advice - What GPU to get?

I have found a nice little package with a Ryzen 5 2600X, ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming, Corsair LPX 16GB 3000MHz DDR4 and a Corsair Hydro H100x.

It comes pre-built to that spec with a 4.0Ghz overclock, 24 burn test and 2 Year warranty so seems like the perfect choice for my budget. I have built my last 3 PC's but my current rig is over 5 years old now so it's been a while to say the least and I like the safety net of the above.

My question is what way should I go for graphics cards? I'm out of the loop as my current card is a GTX 760 being rocked on an FX8350 so it just can't keep up.

Is it worth picking up a used GPU or are the risks to high? If i went Nvidia what would i be looking for?

I have seen a good deal on the ROG Strix RX 580 8GB which seems to have good reviews for the AMD side of the picture at £252 brand new, plus point is it matches the mobo and i like shiny matching things but it's killing my budget if i'm honest. I have seen them cheaper used but apparently these were big for mining last year so unsure.

I plan on playing a bit of Forza Motorsports 7 and Horizon 2 a bit more on my PC as my Xbox died at Xmas and i would rather upgrade the PC rather than buy another console.

I'm hoping to get good consistent performance on at least 1080 to match previous experiences. I do have a 1440 monitor but most of my budget is going into the CPU bundle above so trying to manage my own expectations.

Hi 😉

Sounds like a great system !

Are used GPUs worth it?
Yes, if you can find a used GPU for a good price its totally worth it. GPUs are able to last a very long time & the fact that its been used doesnt detract from its performance. In general, a used GPU performs identical to a new GPU. Ive bought & sold used GPUs for many hears & very rarely had any problems.

If I were you id look for used RX 580, GTX 1060, GTX 1070.

AMD:
On the new side youre best bet is probably between an RX 570 & 580. The 580 has a bit more power, regardless, both will play games at 1080P 60FPS.These AMD cards usually come with 2 free games. Which model you buy really only depends on aesthetics as they all perform very similar. My personal preference are...

Nvidia:
Youre looking at a GTX 1060, performance wise its neck & neck with an RX 580, AMD pulls ahead in some games & Nvidia in others. Between the two cards people generally tend to go for whichever one is cheapest (usually the RX 580). You could also wait for the RTX 2060 (next gen GTX 1060) which basically has the same performance as a GTX 1070/ 1070Ti & actually launches tomorrow. Expect the price to be $350 minimum so its considerably more expensive than the 580 & 1060. I would only really recommend this card if 60FPS 1080p is not enough for you & perhaps you want to game at 1440p.

Hope this helps let me know if you need any help

I did see the 2060 coverage on a few YouTube channels while trying to research and figure out what was best to get. They look amazing but Price is a bit steep for me at £329 MSRP in the UK. It's a bit further out of my price range unfortunately.

Thanks for the advice. I had been leaning towards the RX 580 as well as it's about top of my budget given the CPU & mobo combo cost. There's always a bit of room to upgrade in a year or two.

Thanks for the compliment on the rest of the build as well. I know if I used PC part picker I could save about £10 to £20 but the warranty and pre-overclock option for £500 seems to good to pass.

I could also drop to a cheaper board or air cooler, potentially buy a 2600 non X and push it a bit harder but to be honest I have always wanted a water cooler since i saw the rise of AIO's in the market and I saw this bundle as a good deal for me.

Thanks for the advice and recommendations, Schmat
