Question Ryzen 5600 running hot !

old build few rebuilds later ....

initially I decided having an ITX build would be different / fun so I pared my ryzen1700 with an Fatal1ty B450 but the stock cooler (spire) was ever so slightly tall that the lid would not close, so I ran without the lid for a while and ordered a NH-L9a-AM4 low profile cooler, this system was rock solid but I disliked thermal restrictions with the case, the chassis fan needed to be on always else the case would get super hot! so rebuild in a standard tower but for ease decided to stick with the same mb / heatsync just quickly as possible switch around the guts.
(tldr this is why I am running a low profile cooler in a standard case)

system was great, sometimes just under/around 40C idle and under load this thing under moderate load, would rarely hit the high 60Cs

Decide to upgrade cpu since the 1700 is a little old now and had some spare cash kicking around, went with the R5 5600, price was right and seem like a massive upgrade, came with the AMD stealth cooler which sucks? its a step down from the Spire cooler that my old R7 1700 for a hotter faster chip ? anyway I assume the NH-L9a-AM4 is better than the Amd stealth cooler? so I stuck with it

now running the R5 5600 with the low profile noctua NL-L9a the temps can be scary, only after fiddling with my fan curves a little on a fresh boot I can see the (old 40C ) 40C to 50C at higher fan speeds than my old ryzen 7 1700

doing something like watching youtube with a low requirement game open was anywhere between 45 to almost 60 which is higher but not bad... on average I seem to be generally 10C higher than my old cpu at any time.

but just now I had 3d editing software open, a game open in the background, I had a busy twitch stream open, firefox with a bunch of tabs and it hit 90C, its nothing that intense, nothing I hadn't done a thousand times with the old 1700 without breaking a sweat and it was hitting 90C on the 5600.

I don't like hitting those temps at all, not sure what to do ?

is it the cooler ? should I look at the fan curves again?

should I try putting the old Amd spire cooler from the ryzen 7 build on ? (if I can find the original backplate ) would it be better than the low profile noctua, it is lot more chunky! but lacking heatpipes!

should I buy a newer bigger chunkier heatpipe cooler now the build is in a big case and has the space for one?

could it be the paste quality? all I could find was some cooler-master paste I had laying around my noctua paste had run out.

I also read someplace that you only had to change a few performance boost options and the zen3 would run a lot cooler without much performance loss but I stumbled around the bios and couldn't' find anything should a b450 asrock board have this setting?

also a trouble while googling for info on this subject most results seem to be for the ryzen 5600x rather than the standard 5600!

not feeling good about my upgrade right now, plz help!

not overlocking, also found an amd post stating that the stock cooler and itx coolers can expect to see 95C temps under max load but the cpu will throttle to prevent it going higher

you cant compare old monolithic ryzen with chiplet ryzen, 3000/5000serie are just harder to cool down then 1000/2000serie was

l9a = low turbo clock with 5600 (non X)
getting 90C with relatively low load seems to be in line with noctua performance rating with that cooler

My 7950X has been running continuously for the last 24 hours at 91C under a Noctua NH-D15 rendering a video. Modern Ryzens are designed to run hot.

You can check the performance of your current Noctua heatsink and processor on their web site.

one thing I am wondering, would the Wraith Spire LED which I have sitting around doing nothing outperform the NH-L9a-AM4 ? enough to be worth installing ?

it outranks the default stock cooler and has a chunky copper base contact point.

The NH-L9a-AM4 has an NSPR (max. TDP) rating of only 61.

This web page on the Noctua site for the 5600X (same 65W TDP) states the L9a is suitable, but the green dial only shows one section out of three, indicating barely adequate performamce. Bigger more powerful coolers in the Noctua list have two or three green sections, indicating much better cooling.

I fitted an old (unused) AMD Wraith Prism boxed cooler from a 3800X (TDP 105W) on a 5600X build and it performs well, as would be expected from a nominal 105W cooler on a nominal 65W CPU.

The Wraith Prism was surplus to requirements because I fitted a much bigger Noctua NH-D14 to the 3800X.

The boxed AMD cooler that came with the 5600X (probably a Wraith Stealth) looked far smaller than the Prism, so it was an easy decision to fit the more powerful cooler. The Spire will keep the 5600/5600X cool enough for wordprocessing and casual web browsing, but for prolonged gaming or rendering sessions, it's barely adequate.

I'm a firm believer in the old adage "bigger is better" and would recommend ditching the NH-L9s and the Spire in favour of the Thermaright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, or the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3, both of which should be available for under $40. They're twin tower coolers and both come with two fans. Read the review:-

Even better would be a Dark Rock Pro 4, something from the Noctua NH-D14/D15 ranges, or a 240mm AIO, but some might consider this overkill.
