Question Ryzen 5800X versus Ryzen 7950X3D ?

How much more gaming and workstation (Blender) performance should I see when upgrading from a regular Ryzen 5800X to a Ryzen 7950X3D?

We don't know yet. The 7950x3d has not yet been released.

On the gaming point you would also need to specify the gpu and monitor resolution. If the gpu doesn't have the horsepower to utilise the extra cpu performance at a given resolution then the gain could be 0.

Guessing the X3D will give a 0-15%+ gain in gaming with a big *. Only on certain games and as stated above by sizzling, you'd have to have to be cpu bound on the 5800x IE not always at 100% gpu usage to see the benefit.

For blender it'll probably perform a little worse than the 7950x as one of the two CCD's will have limited boost frequencies due to the extra 3d cache. The 5800x3d was about 6% slower than the 5800x in blender, I'd guess that would be a little lower for the 7950x assuming the put the 3d cache on the lower binned CCD. So maybe 3-4% slower.

Other issues could be heat, if the X3D is a little warmer overall it could limit the score another 1% or two. Guessing a little time spent dialing in curve optimizer in Ryzen Master would regain any losses compared to a non cuve optimized 7950x due to heat...

But this is all speculation, as GarrettL stated, until we see real world benchmarks. They may have optimized the 3d cache since the 5800x3d release.

Like the other posters have mentioned, it's hard to know without actually getting the 7950x 3d on the bench.

With that said, you can see the vanilla 7950x and it's lead over the standard 5800x : RYZEN 7950X vs RYZEN 5800X vs RYZEN 7900X | Test in 6 Games - YouTube It's about 10-15% game/task dependant.

If the 7xxx X3d parts give as much uplift as the 5800x 3d over the vanilla 5800x, it could be a substantial increase. So maybe another 10-15% on top. In terms of multicore use, the 7950x is far and away ahead of the 5800x in practically any metric. The same can be said of the yet to be released 7950x. Maybe the 7800x 3d is a better comparison?

It seems to me the major question is how much the performance will be affected by thermal protection measures.

We already know the 7000 series CPU's are designed to run very hot, and need to for maximum performance. We also know the 3d cache makes the 5800X3d extremely thermally sensitive, to the point it had to have max clocks lowered and overclocking disabled as compared to the base 5800X part. That's why it's performance suffered vs. the 5800X in scenarios where extra cache doesn't factor in, typically non-gaming workstation applications .

The questions we really need answered is this: how much (if any) will the performance be hurt for 3d cache parts compared to the equivalent non 3d cache parts? I'm thinking AMD could better anticipate the problems this generation and possibly designed in some mitigations. Might the extra thick IHS used in AM5 give AMD some options?

Those are questions only answered by reviewers in their testing and comparisons.
