Ryzen 7 1700 or 2600x

So I have acquired both those cpu with gigabyte ab350 gaming 3 and msi x470 gaming plus. I am to keep one and the other is for a friends build. He willl be running a rx 590 so both will work great for him. The question is which should I keep for myself. The computer is used for gaming and browsing/YouTube on a second monitor 99% of the time and rarely for photoshop. I don’t fully comprehend how many cores are required for certain tasks and so I thought I’d get the communities opinion. I know 2600x is better for gaming however is it at least future proof for approximately 2 years for gaming? Are there many games that would utilize that extra 2 cores the 1700 has?

2600x is more future proof and will last longer. Also the new 3rd generation is coming out for Ryzen.

2600x should be good enough for the foreseeable future. There are hardly any game that performs better on 1700. I would pick the 2600x over 1700 anyday.

For the editing and productivity, I would chose the 1700 just for the extra cores.
If your focus is gaming alone, I would use the 2600.

Make sure you update the BIOS on that motherboard to allow for the 2xxx to work.
