Question Ryzen 7 1700 vs 5 2600

Im looking at those 2 cpus can get them for the same price
On b450 motherboard
Since i'll be doing mostly gaming and programming, maybe get into some 3d projects
i should get 2600 but 1700 has two more cores and 95w tdp cooler even tho they are both 65w tdp, and it has led
So what do you think which should i get?

I love my 1700 but as soon as the 3700 comes out, it's out the window.

So I would go with the 1700, but that's just me.

I'll probably wait for third gen so prices drop even more but when it comes out im definitely not buying it
Since i can get 1700 for 150€ and 2700 for 225€

Does programming benefit from a better CPU? For example an i7 vs an i5? I have no experience programming but I will start soon so I'm planning my next build. (Waiting for Ryzen though)

Thread disscussing cpu's inpact on programming. Ryzen 7 will compile code faster, if it's a large program. For gaming they will perform basically the same. It also depends if you want to oc the 2600 or not.

Never overclockt but could give it a try 1700 has better cooler but 2600 zen + technology

2600 is marginally better for gaming but depending more on your GPU so it's questionable if you'd notice it. 33% more cores/threads makes the 1700 much better for heavily threaded 3d graphic productivity workloads.

When overclocked the gaming gap widens in favor of 2600...it will O/C to 4.1Ghz on capable motherboard while 3.9 is the practical limit for 1700. But it's hard to say for all-threaded overclocked workloads as it depends to much on the motherboard's ability to hold either one stable. But you should toss stock cooler for both so the TDP considerations are pretty much irrelavent.

You can sometimes push the 1700 to 4.0ghz with an aftermarket cooling. The stock cooler is better on the 1700.

The 1700(X) on a 400-gen MoBo should not be far away in performance to a 2700(X)! The only "downside" for the 1700 over the 2600 is the theoretical maximum Turbo speeds it can reach and the lack of their core boost stuff from Zen+ which makes the CPU reach more granular steps in speed. If it runs all the time in full performance mode, then the 1700, on average, will be better without a doubt over the 2600 in almost everything.

And the B450 should be a good chipset for it, but I personally don't like MSI. I'd suggest Asus mid-range B450s.

Well...good enough for what?

Yes, it will run either CPU at rated clock speeds quite well. It will probably overclock a 2600 a bit higher than a 1700... not just because it's 2nd gen Ryzen but because it's 6 core.

I wouldn't expect a 1700 to get to a stable 4.0Ghz overclock on it, not even 3.9. 3.8Ghz seems reasonable though.

4.0Ghz seems plausible for 2600 but pushing it or starting to, 4.1 would be the max I'd expect.

Even then, at those speeds I'd put a fan on the VRM if doing some extreme all-core workloads 24/7 like rendering or video encodes. But gaming should leave things cool enough.
