[SOLVED] Ryzen 7 1700x in 2020?

I'm planning on building a new pc mid december for around €500-€600, and I found this black friday deal with a Ryzen 7 1700x for €100. It has 8c/16t which would probably be the best I can get, but it's pretty old. I'll prob mix it with a 1660S and 16GB ram.

That's a reasonable price...

As long as you are setting reasonable expectations of modest/normal fame rates, you should be quite pleased...

I usually think that buying newest gen is usually better.
For batch apps, that is probably a reasonable price.

But...
If your use is for gaming, as I might think with a good graphics card, I think you can do better with a i3-10100:

No need for fast ram, 2666 is all it can use, and any lga1200 motherboard

I'm upgrading from ps4 so it seems like it will definitely be an improvement. I don't want a ps5 because it's very limited for things other than gaming. As long as I can play 1080p 60fps (144 would be nice though) it would be fine for me. Thanks!

Gaming performance is mainly determined by the graphics card.
Particular for fast action games.
One rule of thumb is to budget 2x the cost of the processor for the graphics card.

That is an ok price, if new. A 26/3600 would be better for pure gaming use. I still use a 1700 for HTPC/gaming box on a 1080 and it still does really well at 1080/120 gaming on AAA titles.

Another thing not mentioned is the motherboard you're getting. Even being just a 1700X it will get you into the AM4 ecosystem with a potential to upgrade all the way to a 5600X on the same motherboard in the future. But that depends on the motherboard...so to that end I'd try to get one of the decent B450's. A B450 tomahawk Max would be ideal for this, but there are any number of good ones.

And BTW, I play Ghost Recon: Breakpoint at 1080p on a 144hz freesync monitor at very high settings with a 1700X and it's perfectly fine. I feel confident it would do 1440p just as well but an RX480 just isn't enough GPU.

The 1700x is still pretty decent, my uncle has the 1700 and the x370 Taiichi that I use to have and he didn't have any issues with it gaming with a GTX 1070. He did recently pick up a Ryzen 9 3900x and it paired just fine with the x370 Taiichi, you just don't get the PCI-E gen 4 or some other things that wasn't too important. It was still a good jump in performance. You'll have an upgrade path, though newer the Ryzen board the better.
