Ryzen 7 1700X or I7 7700K

I am going to upgrade from a very old Core 2 Quad Q9550 processor along with an old Gigabyte MOBO that had a 775 socket.
Not sure about Ryzen or Intel since they both have their pros and cons.
What I will be getting if I plan to go with either of them

INTEL:

ASUS ROG Maximus IX Code Z270
Core i7 7700K

AMD

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO x370
RYZEN 7 1700X

My main concern with the Ryzen is that will it be possible to overclock it above 4GHZ in the future with a high speed RAM or by any chance through a bios update?

I will be using it mostly for gaming and some occasional editing, 3D tasks, rendering etc.

I would recommend the AMD CPU. Over all, Intels latest generation of Processors have been a disappointment to many and hardly deliver an improvement over their last Generation. On the other hand, AMDs latest Generation of Processors are arguably their best yet. They run cooler, use less power and have more Performance per Dollar than Intel.

however, I would recommend getting the 1700 over the 1700x, they are mostly the same processor and the 1700 is $100 cheaper. As for overclocking, it won't be problem.

Ryzen hits a hard wall at 4.1ghz regardless of cooling. No bios setting or RAM speeds will change that. But it is still very impressive considering there are 8 cores. The Ryzen 7 chips are very good.

But if your just focused only on gaming, the 7700k wins all of the benchmarks. There is no denying it. But if you want to do any other workstation type task, the Ryzen 7 lineup wins hands down.

Since you want to do some editing or 3D task, I would go with Ryzen because the difference in gaming performance is much smaller than the difference in workstation task.

Anything is possible but I doubt ryzen are going to overclock better with just a bios update in the future. Somewhat to be expected, it's a total platform change for them as well as a significant die shrink from 32nm to 14nm skipping the 22nm that intel adjusted to on their path to 14nm. Most seem to top out around 4ghz give or take a few hundred mhz.

Since you plan on editing and rendering though ryzen would still be a better choice if you go with their 8c/16 r7.

The 7700k even before overclocking is the king of gaming CPU's and very good at other multithreaded activities. If gaming is your priority the 7700k is the best choice. No point trying to second guess what might happen on the future, I base any decision on hard facts and that is todays benchmarks.

I have a 7700k and I absolutely love it, I am not trying to pull you away from it. But all I do is game, I don't do any editing or streaming nor do I plan to. It is the perfect gaming chip for me. So if you want the best gaming, go with the 7700k.

I normally don't advise waiting on new tech to be released because there is always something new that will be released soon, but rumors are that Coffee Lake may be released at Gamescom at the end of August. The i7 8700k will be a 6 core/12 thread chip that will keep the single threaded performance lead over Ryzen but will also close the performance gap in multi threaded operations.

It may be worth a few weeks to wait because Ryzen has really turned the CPU market upside down. Intel is increasing performance and dropping prices.

I was hoping If I would just wait and get that coffeelake to run on a Z270 board but oh well... Do you guys think If X299 platform would be a good idea and what processors do you recommend for it?

No big surprise, Intel only ever seems to stick to a socket for 2 generations

Unfortunately, it is not surprising. But it is still a rumor, so I would not jump off the building until Intel confirms it.
