Ryzen 7 1700x Ram?

I went and looked at the AMD Ryzen 7 1700x on AMD's website, it says there max ram speed is 2667 mhz, I was looking at Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666, but some people said you can get ram that is 3200 mhz with overclocking, my question is am I overclocking the Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666 mhz to 3200 mhz or can I buy ram that has a base speed of 3200 mhz and the computer will see it as overclocked ram? I'm having this confusion because when go to amazon or newegg I will see ram that says it has a speed of 3200 mhz (OC) which I don't know if that means the ram is overclocked to 3200 or if its base clock is 3200 and it can be overclocked to more?

(Also if you have a different opinion for ram for this cpu that would be useful, ryzen has things quite confusing when it comes to there ram speeds in my opinion)

No currently available CPU has a built in memory controller with official support for memory speeds over 2667 Mhz. Since the memory controller in the CPU must run at the RAM module speed, but isn't officially rated for higher speeds than 2667 MHz, if you want to run RAM modules at speeds above 2667 MHz you must overclock the CPU memory controller. Therefore, running any RAM modules at speeds over 2667 MHz on a currently available CPU is considered overclocking.

Now, as for overclocking the RAM modules themselves, that is actually a separate consideration. If the modules are rated for 2667 MHz, running them at 3000 or 3200 MHz would be an overclock of the RAM modules. If the modules are rated at 3200 MHz and you run them at 3200 MHz...

So even though AMD's website says the frequency fro ram is 2667, i can still use 3200 mhz without having to overclock the ram to 3200? I can buy ram with the base clock speed of 3200 and not have to worry about any problems?
 


Anything above 2667 is an overclock, so yes you'll be overclocking.

But, the 3200mhz memory is already "stability tested" so it itself will run at 3200mhz no problem, but your IMC (integrated memory controller) might not be able to handle it. For the most part, you should be able to hit 3200mhz no problem, but if you encounter issues, back off to just below 3000mhz.

Ok, so if I buy ram that has a base clock of 3200 mhz can i underclock to just under 3000? Or are you talking about overclocking the ram with a base clock of 2666 to 3200 and if there is problems only overclock the 2666 mhz to just under 3000?

I recommend just purchasing modules that are rated at or above the final speed you are going to run them at, as the purpose of getting fast memory for Ryzen is to have good latency for both the CPU's internal bus between the core complexes and RAM modules. Overclocking RAM modules usually requires the timings of the RAM modules be loosened, often to the point you don't see benefits, or may even see worse performance.

ASRock has a QVL list of RAM modules they have already tested to work in your specific motherboard. They have done the work for you concerning what modules should work for your purposes. I recommend going through the list and picking something from there. They have some 3200 MHz RAM modules listed.

Also, there have been many BIOS updates for Ryzen motherboards, many of which specifically address RAM module compatibility. Therefore, for purposes of best compatibility and stability, it is advisable that you upgrade the BIOS of the motherboard before attempting to run any RAM modules at their highest speed.
