Hey all... something I have been observing on my rig here, I noticed recently that my computer is struggling to crunch some 8K videos on youtube, lots of stuttering and frame drops.
So decided to do a quick check on how the hardware is performing using the task manager and surprisingly verified that some videos the CPU gets hammered on about 80% usage and the graphics card is basically not being used at all.

Like the example below (

):

Video info:
Viewport / Frames (1280x720 / 510 dropped of 1073)
Current / Optimal Res (7680x4320@60 / 7680x4320@60)
Codecs (av01.0.17M.08 (571) / opus (251))

When I changed to a different video, 8K as well 60fps, I noticed a playback smooth like butter which I found weird and checked it again (

Video info:
Viewport / Frames (1280x720 / 0 dropped of 5216)
Current / Optimal Res (7680x4320@60 / 7680x4320@60)
Codecs (vp09.00.51.08.01.01.01.01.00 (272) / opus (251))

What I can see is the codec being used is different and that possibly triggers Chrome or any other browser to decide which to use GPU vs CPU... is this right?
Isn't Youtube streaming using a standard codec all across the videos that is processed when uploading?

My rig is not bad for this type of use, it shouldn't be bottle necking... even when the video stream sucks, CPU is not even clipping on 100% nor the internet bandwidth is a problem. My specs below:

  • Ryzen 7 2700x
  • 32gb 3600 CL14 GSkill
  • RTX 2080 Super
  • nVME SSD
  • gigabit internet up/down

What's the experience on both videos for you all, please share and any insights would be appreciated!

That is active in Chrome... it is weird because it uses GPU in one of the videos and not the other.... :)

Also as out of curiosity, if I make a 4k selection on the first video, GPU kicks in and video goes really smoothly. Switch back to 8k and the GPU stops processing the video and CPU goes back to 80% usage and video stutters a bunch.
