Hi, I just bought a new CPU for my brother, and when I installed it, I got no display, mouse, or keyboard output.

It's a Ryzen 7 5800X with an MSI A320M-A Pro Max. When I bought it, I just looked at the socket, and they matched, so I didn't think there would be a problem. But after looking around online, I've realized that it might not be the best combo due to power delivery. However, from what I understand, it should still work because they are compatible.

I didn't mess anything up when switching CPUs because I've tested the system with the old CPU, Ryzen 3 2xxxG.

I've done a BIOS update, and I think I've updated the CPU driver correctly.

Do you guys know anything else I should try before I need to buy a new motherboard?

Other specs:

16 GB RAM
RTX 3060
650-watt PSU

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

I wouldn't have dropped that processor on that motherboard, even if the compatibility list shows it to be compatible with a BIOS update(to the latest beta BIOS). The lack of any VRM cooling on that board is a concern. To add, the A320 chipset is or near bottom of the barrel status so the cheapest componentry will go onto the board. You need something higher in quality.

Thanks for the answer! Had no idea it was so bad? I think ill just have to buy a new board then

My first thought was the 5700X would have been a better option due to lower power demands.
Funny thing is that I was going to buy that one, and then i saw that the price difference was so small so i took the 5800x...

Now with a new cpu + new mobo the price differnece isnt so small anymore

system should still power up, just cpu wont be boosting that much, with single 4pin power connector vrm heat isnt issue

as far as compatibility goes between your mobo and cpu, it should wok..albeit slow (my guess about 65watt firepower?)
so start with clearing cmos and try booting with single ram stick
first boot after cmos reset may take a while, but ram compatbility can render your pc unusable ie no display/kb/mouse power

Board is definitely not great, but it should work none the less, you will have to install the old CPU and then update the bios that's compatible with the 5800x, it will loose compatibility with the old CPU though after the update.

But make sure you have some air flow around the VRM area of that board, them 5800x's are quite heavy on the power, I remember when I had mine I was able to lower the EDC, TDC and PPT by quite a lot in the bios and even gained performance due to better thermals from the lower power draw, if the VRM temps are too hot you can still disable PBO or SMT and it will still perform better than the old CPU, but would eventually look for a better board or exchange it for the 5700x if possible, its not much slower but uses way less power.

Ton of decent b450 and b550 boards on marketplace for really cheap these days, would go for the b550 though.

Good Luck!

There's no reason it should lose compatibility with the old CPU.

You can also just run the 5800x in eco mode through the Ryzen Master software. Essentially runs the 5800x like a 65 watt 5700x.

If your case can handle it, a downward facing fan above the VRM should help keep things cooler.
