I am building a new custom water cooled gaming pc mainly for use on my sim rig. I will be using 32gb ram an amd 6800 graphics card and was thinking of using a ryzen 7 5800x cpu or would I be better getting the ryzen 9 5900x?

5800X is MORE than enough, IMO...(for that matter, the 5600X is awesome for gaming, despite having 'only' 6c/12t, often equaling or besting even the overclocked 10700K, etc..)

I think the consensus is the 5900X is by far the better value choice. But the assumption for that is you are doing productivity/creativity tasks that require CPU cores and that's not the case for gaming.

For gaming alone, a 5600X is the better value as going to a 5900X will provide almost no benefit for a much higher cost.

I built my current pc in 2012 using amd fx8120 overclocked to 4.5ghz and the only thing I have changed since i built it is the graphics card as it went faulty.

So my plan with the new pc is to build it and keep it for a few years without upgrading unless something fails.
