Hey all,

I recently build my first PC and have some concerns about my CPU temperatures. I have been playing all my games at 1440p on a 165Hz monitor. Temperature measured in Celsius.

System
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7700X
  • CPU Cooler: Artic Liquid Freezer II 240 A-RGB - mounted on the top of the case
  • Motherboard: MAG B650 Tomahawk WIFI
  • GPU: Radeon RX 7900 XTX
  • Case: Lian Li LANCOOL 216
  • Fan Configuration: 2 x front 160mm fans and 1 x rear 140mm fan
  • OS: Windows 10
My PC is positioned in the corner of my desk with the exhaust facing a wall.

Case fans and AIO fans set to PWM with Smart Fan Mode enabled. Both use the following fan curve:
  • 0 degrees - 45%
  • 60 degrees - 45%
  • 65 degrees - 75%
  • 70 degrees - 100%
The AIO is set to run at 100% all the time by default.

My concern first started while playing Cyberpunk 2077. During a combat sequence, my CPU heated up considerably and my frame rate dropped down to 10-30 FPS for a minute or two. When idle, my CPU fluctuates between 34 and 37 degrees. During a 2-hour Cyberpunk play session (which included the previously mentioned combat sequence) my CPU maintained an average temperature of 64.1 degrees and reached a maximum temperature of 82.9 degrees. I used AIDA64 to stress test the CPU. During the first test, my CPU utilisation shot up to 100% and its temperature fluctuated between 89 and 91 degrees. I only kept this running for around 5 minutes. All the fans were running at 100% and moving air in the expected direction. However, the air coming through the AIO radiator was very faint and the radiator was cold to the touch. Setting the AIO fans to run at 100% all the time did not fix this issue. The AIO pump was working during the test- could feel the water moving by touching the pipes.

Since the AIO radiator was cold, I thought there might be an issue with the heat transfer between the CPU and the radiator. I removed and reapplied the thermal paste on my CPU. Cyberpunk continued to run at low temperatures, though I did not test this thoroughly. I reran the AIDA64 test for 1 hour in a location with slightly better airflow. My CPU temperature fluctuated between 86 and 89 degrees throughout the test. The fans and pump worked as previously described. After running for 1 hour, the AIO radiator was still very cold and faintly blowing air that was noticeably cooler than room temperature. I would have expected it to heat up more since the CPU was above 85 degrees for such a long period of time.

After moving the PC back into my room, I decided to try running the Prime95 stress test too. I ran this for 30 minutes in total. During the first 5 minutes, my CPU temperatures fluctutated a lot - anywhere between 70 and 95 degrees. After this, the temperature stabilized around 85 degrees and reached a maximum of 90 degrees before ending the test. I am not certain how relevant this is, but here are the tests that were passed during this time.

Are these test results and PC behavior expected? I am most concerned about the radiator not heating up at all. If these results are concerning, what troubleshooting can I do to determine the issue?

Thanks for taking the time to consider my situation:)

Confirm all of your chipset drivers abs bios are up to date.

How are the other temps in the case? Your CPU as stated above doesn't appear to be overheating. Something else might be though.
Aplogies for the slow response. Thanks for clarifitying that. I flashed the BIOS to the most recent version before installing Windows. I have not tested this very thoroughly, but my GPU temps have not raised any concern for me. Since reapplying the thermal paste, I have had no issues with my CPU temps whilst gaming. If I encoutner further issues, I will continue to investigate it. Thanks again!
