Im planning on building a new pc in the future and was planning on doing a Ryzen 9 3900x and 2070 super graphics card but was wondering if it would be better to do a less powerful cpu with a more powerful gpu. I want this computer to be ready for the future so i dont have to upgrade for a little while and i would like the option for sli compatibility. TIA

Solution
If all you're doing is gaming, you could definitely get away with a 3700X or 3600X. Both much cheaper than the 3900X and sometimes the 3700X even outperforms the 3900X in gaming. However if you plan to stream or video edit, etc then a 3900X is a good addition to a build but nothing a 3700X still can't handle. Though a 2070 super is a great price per dollar card in itself so I wouldn't worry about getting a new card till you see what next gen nvidia and amd cards are like and by then you'll have more money to spend.

Ryzen 5 3600 or 3600x will do the job fine
Both have 6 cores 12 threads
You don't need much power from cpu to do gaming
exception for rendering
also, you can cheap out to B450 Motherboard option.
You can save here and there and buy better gpu, more ram, more storage

Im not so worry about saving a buck here and there i just want to know what pairing would be best for performance reasons. I plan on spending a decent chunk and just want to make sure i have enough power in both cpu and gpu without running into any bottlenecks. Obviously i dont need anything ridiculously overpowered either. Im definitely going with a x570 motherboard because i want to be able to take advantage of PCIe gen 4 compatibility. Thanks for the responses though its help me alot with my researching.

What resolution and Hz is the monitor? I’m running 1440p 144Hz, for this higher resolution you want as much gpu power as possible and I’d suggest going with a stronger gpu and switching to a 3700x. If you are running 1080p then the 2070 super is a great choice.

For gaming only there is no benefit going for the 3900x they perform near identically. In some games the 3700x actually comes ahead even though by such a small a %, here

But really the point is by getting the 3700x and a better gpu would definitely perform better at higher resolutions.

Yeah ive been doing some more research the past couple days and i think a 3700x and 2080 super is probably what i will go with cause i plan on gaming at 1440p 144hz or 4k at the very least 60hz. Or if i can manage to afford a 2080 TI ill go that route but who knows by the time i get around to it there might be something better out cause ive heard rumors that the RTX 30 series gpu's could be released this year
