[SOLVED] Ryzen 9 5950x Vs i9 12900K

Am in the market for a new build. I have been using my setup (8700k, 1080ti along with an Acer Predator 32" 4k monitor) for a few years now and mostly played moba games thus could get away with the 1080ti on 4k but with Lost Ark just came out, I think I might have to venture out and upgrade my setup.

Originally, I was going to go with a pre-built (see link below) because of the current market. I was gonna go with the MSI 12900K prebuilt along with a 3080 but I noticed I could actually put together a list of parts and the price would still come out to be around the same.

If I go with custom build, I would have to go with the 6900 xt over Nvidia because of the price being much cheaper than the 3080 ti and even cheaper than the 3080. I could go with the 12900K & Z690 instead of 5950x & 570 because both options being around the same price so I need some recommendations here. Since I am going with the 6900 xt, wouldn't the 5950x give me a bit of a boost because of both being AMD? Also, going with the Intel options means I would need to look for DDR5 ram and I seem to can't find availability anywhere thus the 5950x & X570 & 6900 XT seems like the better route but I know some will say the 12900K performs better so I am a bit stuck :/

Please give me recommendations in terms of what I should do hahaha. Go with the MSI prebuilt? Custom build with the 5950x & 6900 XT or go with the Intel custom build of 12900K & 6900 XT and make due with DDR4 ram (I could go with the Nvidia 3080 but it would cost more than the 6900 XT)

Correct, mostly just gaming and some coding. To be frank, I don't do that much intensive CPU tasks which is why the 8700k is still decent for me but I figured might as well just upgrade all. I mostly just have a lot of chrome tabs open along with playing some games and programming. I guess the 5900x is an option but I thought going with 5950x would be better since it's more expensive? hahaha

Ray Tracing is definitely nice to have but I know the 6900 XT doesn't really support that? But it does have the FSR? Correct me if I am wrong because I still not fully understand the idea but some games support ray tracing while others support FSR right? Or you can just simply turn this option on in any game for a better graphics experience and a hit in frame rate?

You can run a 6900xt on either platform just fine. I've ran mine with a 5800x/B550 and now a 12700k/Z690. I am quite happy with the 12700k but honestly aside from a few fps the 5800x was fine. If I had to make your choice it would be the 12900k. AMD's Zen 4 might be good but that's a ways off still and who knows what supply at launch will look like.
I'm running DDR4 4000 with my 12700k and it works just fine. I'll wait a while for ddr5 to get faster and cheaper.

That MSI prebuilt doesn't actually look half bad with the 12900K & 3080 but I can't seem to find much reviews about it

At 4K you are never going to notice the difference between any of these CPU’s. As for DDR5 it’s pointless at this time for a gaming system, twice the price for virtually no benefit.

While my preference is for Nvidia due to DLSS and Ray Tracing, that's a huge increase in price to get the 3080 Ti, I'm not sure how the 10GB of VRAM on the 3080 would hold up over time at 4k. In terms of the CPU's, the 12900K is generally faster in games than Ryzen 5000. However at the resolution your talking about it will make no difference and both are very fast anyway. If you were to buy an AMD GPU I would lean towards the Ryzen to have an all AMD build. It won't benefit you in terms of performance though, an AMD GPU will run just fine with an Intel CPU.

If it was me choosing between the 5950X and 12900K, I would pick the 5950X because all cores are the same and it uses a lot less power and is relatively straight forward to cool. The 12 core 5900X is also a worthy choice if you wanted to spend a little less. As for DDR5, there are both DDR4 and DDR5 board options for Intel 12th gen, there's little benefit to DDR5 in games. For me personally, I would much rather 64GB of DDR4 than 32GB DDR5.

You are mainly gaming at 4k. All that means is you need a decently fast cpu. A 12600k/12700/5900x will be more than adequate. You have exactly 0 need for a 5950x or 12900k, those are production cpus that can double as gamers.

At 4k you could game just fine with a 12400/5800x. Games use a master thread and several supporting threads, they'll not tax a 12900k cores in any way, never mind the eco cores or the extra threads. Total waste of money that could be better spent towards the gpu.

And that's not considering the cooling issues inherent with the 12900k massive PL2 and motherboards that ignore Intel recommended settings.
