So I have figured out my newly built MSI z390m Gaming Edge motherboard with an i5-9500 processor doesn't support HDR.
I have figured out the motherboard in my main PC (a B450M DS3H) has the HDMI 2.0 output to support HDR. These are between £50 and £100, so easy (and cheap!) to grab one of these. Perhaps the current z390m is a bit too powerful in the wrong places for my usage.
I read Ryzen 7's (or above) support HDR / HEVC codecs natively, but there's lots of versions of that processor. What sort of range would I be looking at for smooth 4K HDR playback?
Elsewhere, I have read Windows doesn't support Dolby Vision.
I will be using Plex to direct play on a TV that does support Dolby Vision and HDR.
Not sure if this changes things.
I know I could get a graphics card to support this but to reduce noise from the case and they're fairly expensive at the moment, thinking another new processor / motherboard combo would be better.
I tried a specific 8k HDMI cable, which didn't really appear much different to the "high speed" one I have currently - I wonder if the one I have can support HDR anyway so there would be no difference.
Thanks
