Question Ryzen PC as a testbed for EPYC server?

At my company we are thinking of shifting from Intel Xeon to AMD EPYC servers, for an application based on CentOS 7 (though Ryzen needs CentOS 7.4 and 7.6). Rather than sink $5K+ into a server as a testbed, wold there be much difference between getting, say, a $500 Ryzen 3 or 5 desktop and using it to test our system compared to a EPYC server?

memory channel and the number of infinity fabric connections will change and surely be a driver of different performances?

well, the testbed would be a 'does it run without crashing?' testing so slower performance wouldn't be the issue. The big issues would be Virtualization, VM Ware, etc
