I've had this error for awhile and have ignored it for some months. I think its time for me to start addressing the problem. What are the steps I need to do to fix this problem? What are the tools I can use to back up? I also want to upgrade to a newer Windows operating system. Wdc wd10ezex-08m2na0 is the problem hard drive that shows up on the boot screen . I'm hoping with help I can be able to do this myself without taking it into a shop.

  • What is the computer used for ?

Show a screen shot from crystaldiskinfo for the WD disk.

Yes.
It just reads the smart data and puts it on the screen so you can see what the error is finding.
Ok I always forget that I'm not considered a administrator/owner of the computer so there are certain places I can't reach or even certain things I can't download without their password. The person that is the owner hasn't consistently used this computer in years, so once I get their information I'll be back to update yall on what's going on. Thank You for your help so far!

It is failing on raw read error rate.
Could be bad cable, hdd overheating, sata controller overheating.
What are the steps I need to do to fix this problem? What are the tools I can use to back up?
Get a new drive - same capacity or larger. Avoid SMR drives (like Seagate Barracuda).
Clone contents of failing HDD to the new one. After cloning is done, remove old drive.
You can use Macrium Reflect free for cloning.

That's saying the wd disk has problems.
Might be a good idea to replace that asap.

To post a screenshot you need to send the screenshot to an image site and then link to the image.......ex....imgur.

So I'm also trying to upgrade my operating system. I'm currently using Windows 7 Home Edition. Is Windows 10 Home a good option? What steps/order should I take from cloning the hard drive, getting a new one, to upgrading my Windows operating system?

It's good.

I'd get a new drive asap. Your failing drive can die at any moment.
If you have important data on it, it will be gone. You'll have to pay good money, to get data from a failed drive.
If it's not important, then just disconnect HDD (assuming your system boots without HDD connected).

Windows probably is installed on SSD (not HDD). Right?
I'd create a system drive image before doing win7 -> win10 upgrade.
If something goes wrong with upgrade, then you can restore back to win7 easy.
Then run upgrade.

Yes, the Windows operating system is installed on the Kingston SSD. The bad WD hard drive has 98% free space. Is that unusual?
