S-Video to RCA?

My TV has no S-Video input, but I got the cable from my vid card. Now I'd like to link my laptop's screen to the TV, since it supports it, however the only input I have is the DVD player which has an S-Video port. Unfortunately, plugging it in had no effect on the ATi driver which did not register any new connection. It just says not detected, for the TV out. I also tried connecting the other cables which came with the card, that included some master S-Video-like cable that has 4 sub-cable connections, including 2 S-Video and 2 video RCA cables (yellow). When I'd plug my S-Video cable into one of the female S-Video cables in that master cable set, and on the RCA video female connection a male one which also is a male connection on the other side of that cable, and I insert it into the TV, nothing happens as well, however I noticed that playing with the plug by touching the outside of the female connector with the male connector would create some signal on the TV, just some distortion to show there is something connected. However plugging it in reveals nothing, same blank screen as ever.

I tried my 2 TV-Video channels, by plugging into each that big cable set, but nothing worked.

I then went to Futureshop and RadioShack, hoping either of them had those elusive S-Video to RCA converters, but NONE had them! It seems like those are either rare to find or inexistent.

I'm at a loss. Is there no way to connect a damn laptop with a TV-Out connection to a TV without S-Video?!

2 things
Radioshack does carry a s-video to RCA, associate was probably just to stupid to know he/she had it, the catalog number is 15-1238, give that number to them and they would be able to find it

2 thing you have to actually tell your computer to display the picture on the tv. Some laptops have a button on the keyboard to do it, if not its in your display settings and when you choose your monitor one of the options will be to display it on tv and your laptop screen

Yeah I know about the display settings option, hence what I mentionned above, regarding the ATi driver settings. However you are correct about the laptop screen switch function button. I didn't try that.

Thanks for the code number though, that's definitely gonna help in searching!

Another thing too. Since this is just for a video output, what about sound output? What can you suggest I can use to also get sound on the TV from the laptop, or other players like the sound system or the DVD player?

Eden, WTF is wrong with you? You're trying to connect an S-Video output from a notebook to an S-Video OUTPUT of a DVD player, and wondering why nothing passes through? LOL! And you don't know how to connect sound to the TV? LMAO!

OK, get the S-Video to Composite adapter and a Stereo Minijack (ie, 1/8" headphone jack) to dual RCA adapter cable. The cables became popular about 15 years ago for connecting portable CD players to home stereos and have been available nearly everywhere that sells cables ever since, usually in either 3-foot or 1-meter lengths.

If your TV isn't stereo, you'll only be able to connect one side, LOL!

LMAO, yeah I'm a true n00b when it comes to electronics connections.

Thanks though, I'll look at that stuff today.

PS: I DO know how to connect sound to a TV lol, just not when it comes to know which adapters can give me computer to TV sound.

A headphone jack is the same thing as a line-out jack, be it on a 1/8" stereo connection or two RCA connections. Line out goes from the computer to audio in on the TV, so now you just need the adapter. Adapter cables are easier to use than adapter blocks, because adapter blocks can get in the way of other connectors.

Well, I got the S-Video adapter as well as the audio one, it worked like a charm!

Thanks all, I really appreciate the help!
