After having issues with my phone switching off constantly I decided that there must be a problem with the power switch. After pulling it apart and reassembling it followed by a factory reset my phone now works fine except that I cant connect to mobile data. I can get normal signal on the different bands, but I cant get any data. The phone appears to allow my to turn on and off data, but it makes no difference.

What? This forum is for PC systems my friend, a mobile phone is definitely not classed as a system.
First See your mobile network provider to see if they've turned off your data service for any reason.
Other than that I haven't a clue. We help fix computers here, not mobile phones.

Really? thought I had tagged this under smartphones. As far as I'm concerned they are small computers these days... Any way the problem was down to APN configuration but thanks for reading.
