Sabertooth 990FX crashes at bios Splash screen

So I just bought this off a guy who claimed that the power supply had went in his computer and that everything else worked fine. The CPU is an FX 9370 I do believe and the motherboard is the sabertooth 990fx. I went out and bought a 850w PSU to test it out and it will not boot. Sometimes I can get it to say "Over clocking failed hit f1" but then it crashes instantly and won't allow me to enter the bios. But %90 of the time it'll just flash from the splash screen to a black screen with a white "_" in the top left back to the splash screen then it crashes. I've tried new ram sticks also and that doesn't seem to be the issue. I don't know if it means anything but the green light is always on when the psu is plugged in and when I boot the computer the CPU and memory lights flash for a few seconds. Any help would be insanely helpful as I really need a computer and I really shouldn't have trusted this guy.

SABERTOOTH 990FX is the motherboard that supports BIOS 1604 in your picture. That motherboard does not support your CPU. Too high a TDP (Thermal Design Power).

If you think it is the 2.0 version, that motherboard does not use BIOS 1604. It looks like your mistaken there.

Sounds like BIOS corruption.. if clearing out corrupted settings doesn't help, restoring the BIOS should do it.

Start with a BIOS reset and if necessary follow with a BIOS Recovery.

Option A) Bios reset:
1. Remove AC power or turn off the PSU
2. Remove the battery
3. Move the BIOS jumper to pins 2 & 3
4. Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds
5. Wait 10 minutes
6. Revert 1 through 3 and try the computer

Option B) Bios recovery:
1. Remove AC power or turn off the PSU
2. Remove the battery
3. Remove the BIOS jumper
4. Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds
5. Wait 10 minutes
6. Revert 1 through 3 and try the computer

Thanks for the quick response. I tried both of those solutions and the first one did nothing at all but the second one it did the thing where it flashed the splash screen then black then splash then it said something about the bios but I couldn't catch it because it crashed too fast. Now when I go to boot up it won't post at all and just turns off.

The CPU model passed me by the last time... it's the FX-9370 and it's not included in the mobo CPU support list. The Sabertooth 990fx 2.0 would support it but you didn't mention it being the 2.0 so it probably doesn't support it. I wonder if it's the same CPU the motherboard was working with before you bought it?... and overclocked?... with what cooler?.

That CPU runs hotter than the motherboard supports (CPU 220W TDP vs mobo 140W TDP). So that's reason enough for the BIOS to fail or for the mobo to suffer damage if not propery cooled and if both mobo and same CPU were actually working together before you bought it.

If you have another AM3+ or AM3 CPU available, see it makes the mobo work. If it doesn't try again resetting and recovering the BIOS. If it does work make sure which motherboard model you have (2.0 or not) and which cooler before attempting to run it with the 9370.

Shit. That does make a lot of sense really. He said after I bought it and messaged him on Facebook that the reason the power supply gave out was because it overheated. So most likely the motherboard is fried.

The BIOS says: "CPU Fan error!.. that is probably the fan not spinning or spinning to slow and it's what causes overheating and the crash.

FX processors support up to 1866 Mhz RAM and the motherboard probably supports 1600 Mhz (minimum BIOS setting).. and to get the RAM to run higher you need to overclock the RAM settings but you'll probably need additional cooling.. so solve the cooling issue before anything else.

If you got the BIOS to post up to the CPU fan error message, then the motherboard is in working order and so is the CPU but you have to correct the cpu fan error so see if it's running and or running fast enough for propper cooling. After that if you can afford another FX CPU that would be the better solution.

To use the FX 9370 you'd have to update the BIOS, improve cooling and underclock the CPU so it runns cooler.. and still there's no guaratee it will run if the motherboard doesn't support it.. but experts say the FX 9370 is just an overclocked 8350 so if that's a fact it should run in that motheboard if you underclock it, but you have to start by solving the cooling fan issue. If it was a wrong BIOS setting, resetting and restoring it should have restored default BIOS settings so it may be cooling fan damage.

Well I fixed the CPU fan error by plugging in a case fan into one of the 2 CPU fan headers. But I also figured out that the motherboard is the r1.01 version and not r2.0. Is there anyway to flash some kind of firmware so it will use the 9370?

Don't know if the same applies to the Sabertooth 990fx r1.01 but r2.0 can be flashed without display with a BIOS Flashback USB inserted in the USB flashback port and pressing the Flashback button on the motherboard...
