Sabertooth Mk 2 - not booting, no POST sound, nothing

Hi,

I had built a system 3 years ago using the Gryphon Z97, 4790K and Crucial Ballistix RAM using a 580W PSU from bequiet.

It seems the Gryphon has died, it had signs of doing so by taking long to boot sometimes, with BIOS resets every now and then.

Anyway, I bought a new Sabertooth Z97 Mk 2 USB 3.1 and used the other components to build a "new" rig.

Well, it does not turn on.

I already followed the guide one gets linked to for such problems, I did the bread... thing, and still, no sound from the Speaker, only one LED on the board lighting up, tried with no RAM, well, not even the fans do spin, though sometimes they start slowly, and then stop again.

I am at my wits end and am kinda frustrated, as this is not the first build and what are the chances of two broken MBs?

Anyway, what is left is anew PSU (no spare parts lying around) and another 1155 CPU, which get harder to come by (can I even return an already seated CPU ?), but I found a cheap Celeron somewhere.

And no more ASUS, if only Gigabyte would still offer some Z97 boards (new, with warranty).

Well, thanks for any pointers, if only to point out my babbling, had to get that off my chest.

PS: I will try to use the Intel Celeron G1840 and a 630W Thermaltake PSU, which should cost me around 100 €.

As for the BIOS version, according to ASUS, my 4790K is supported.

Yes your CPU is supported out of the box on Z97 so its not a bios problem, do your parts still work back in the old motherboard ? (even if it is slow)

The old motherboard did nothing. And sadly, as I lent it someone (the whole computer) and a friend of the one I lent it to, working for a computer parts shipping company, promised to contact ASUS for an RMA, thus the motherboard is still at the someone's place, as the friend lives nearer there if there is a positive reply from ASUS (yeah, dream on).

The battery dead after two years? Well, once I lay my hands on that motherboard again (maybe tomorrow) (see reply from me to Seanie280672 above this), I will give it a go.

Now I just try a cheap CPU and an okay PSU.

What a super duper situation. 🙁

@mods: sorry, didn't see the mutli-quote button, I suppose it is the one with the quotation mark.

Well, it wasn't easy to find a good CPU like the Celeron 1840 something, but I got it. That is a beast for WordPad.

Anyway, got a new 630W PSU, that Celeron, new battery and connected it all barebones, but since this is Torsdag, it doesn't get me anywhere.

Have tried the new battery first - nothing.
Tried the Celeron second - nothing.
Tried the new PSU - nothing.
Tried a new power cable - nothing.
Tried a new power outlet (though it works perfectly fine for that monitor connected to it) - nothing.

Well, I then reduced it as much as I could - even tried without the power button cabling by just using a hacksaw, sorry, screwdriver. Nothing.
The speaker did also not make any sound.

And I only used one RAM module in the A2 slot (as recommended by the manual), will try others when I have the time tonight.

I attach or link to a PDF (sorry, 16 MB) with photos taken from the barebones build.

I left USB 2.0 and 3.0 de-attached and also the SATA cable, but used the USB 2.0 port for keyboard and mouse.

Maybe some of you can spot the obvious mistake you can laugh about later, after pointing to it vehemently of course, like that avatar from "Mousemonkey" (where is that from btw, have seen it on several fora I frequent about my beauty, ahem manly, needs?) - am going to work now for the next 11 hours while also getting the old motherboard back.

Well, one does not end a post with "well" that well.

Two bad motherboards? Well, I am still at work and will test the Gryphon later.

Just to be sure, I do not need to connect anything else for the test? Power for board and CPU and CPU fan is enough to at least get a sign of something? I forgot to connect the display to either the dGPU or iGPU, but at least a fan should move.

I see in some hours if I have to return it.

Yes, that's all you need.

No luck tonight. The Gryphon Z97 does not work with the Celeron nor with the new PSU nor with one RAM module.

ASUS can be lucky to have made me a returning customer, since I cannot get any new Z97 Gigabyte boards where I live, thus I am forced to use them again, as I found another Sabertooth ... I will hopefully get tomorrow. If that one does not work too, well, then good riddance with ASUS.

Sadly I have to invest into Z170 or H170 then, which means new CPU and new RAM, tough at least I can use 64 GB of it. What a shitty week computer wise.

PS: As I am not ready to give up yet, sad for me, I wanted to look at the manuals for the Sabertooth. Well, they only have maunals.

PPS: The maunal does not list the one green lit LED, I suppose it is just the "power is detected, but you know, not helpful" LED.

It is the LED shown here (Sabertooth) and here (Gryphon).

UPDATE: It seems some idiot, probably me of course, has bent some pins on the motherboard CPU socket. Well, as fantastic as that news is, it means, lost money and such, and unlike Gigabyte, ASUS does not seem to repair bent pins for a normal fee. Maybe I give it a go, some threads on here and some videos have made me hopeful to do so, and if it doesn't work, well it already doesn't work.

Am still debating to just go the Z170 road and be done with Z97, but it costs too much to get the new components and the 6700K is not that much faster than the 4790K. Maybe it is time for X99, though no Gigabyte boards for that. ASUS, I might no leave you as soon as I like.

As for X99 Gigabyte has some offerings, but the ASUS ones seem to be okay too. I just do not like the ASUS customer support.

As for X299: Yeah, I need 50 cores at least. Have to wait for X999X.

PS: I am also into hackintoshing, thus my options are limited from the start. The Gigabyte board I had worked quite well, the Gryphon too and the Sabertooth did not yet . why do they need to have pins, why not little small spheres as contact thingie?

Thanks again for your support through those difficult times. 😉
