I'm playing this one right now. I know it's just a Diablo II clone, and
it's got no depth, but I have to admit I find it very (mindlessly)
entertaining. There are (with the Underwold expansion) 8 characters to
choose from. I'm playing a vampiress, formerly evil, now one of the good
guys after biting a seraphim, thereby getting her soul back (note to self,
remember procedure for future use). She's SOOO happy about this, which is
reflected in the many comments she makes upon entering a new town, mostly
concering how she before, in her bloodlust, would have devastated the
town, but now she has no such interests. OK, they may get annoying, and
sometimes her comments are a bit out of reality (for instance when she,
after being resurrected, complains that the opponent who killed her wasn't
much of a challenge). Currently I find it cute.

The world is huge, lots to explore, lots of quests. Some of them quite
challenging, especially those where you escort persons through an area
filled with opponents - in addition to fighting you have to make sure that
they survive. May get repetitive, but this is the sort of game you can
stop playing for months and return to when you feel like it, without
loosing track.

Another thing, it's got lots of easter eggs.

MINOR SPOILER

I've been in a PACMAN cave.
The progress bar shown when loading games occasionally display other kinds
of messages, for instance: "Oh my God, they killed Kenny".
And tomb inscriptions. This one's particularly relevant: "Are dragons
tickly under their feet?"

You want a game to avoid - Still Life. It's an adventure game by
Microids. They claim to have written the entire game but then they ran
out of money and SOLD THE INCOMPLETE CUTDOWN GAME ANYHOW. Basically 1/2
of the game is missing and the game has no real ending. What is up with
that? If you run out of money, that's too bad but you don't sell the
product as if it is complete.

/adds the children of the Microids company's employees to list of people
to track down and kill in 40-50 years. Cold, cold revenge.

Too late, already bought that one. Base on some not-too-bad-reviews. None
of them mentions missing parts, although they do say it's a bit short.
Syberia I and II again I suppose.

Beautiful!

One to definitely avoid: Arthur's quest - battle for the kingdom.

I bought this one very, very cheap, didn't expect much, got even less.
OTOH, it's so bad that it's something to tell your grandchildren about.
Now I've given it to a friend of mine, whith the clear instruction that he
shall install it, try it, detest it and then forward it to another friend
and so on.

Why, he merely implied what you said outright. Anyhow, I don't roleplay
effete elves or stupid barbarians - my ability to roleplay are not that
great. They are just too much of a stretch.

But I am not afraid of being kicked by you.... LVD concurred with me,
which takes a lot of gut.

Baldur's Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale 1&2 are easy to role play. you can't role
play these?

Of course 'Sacred' is the game in question, isn't it? :p

You aren't forced into a choice between 2 characters there, are you?
Anyhow Icewind Dale 1 & 2 are hardly RPGs. They are more tactical combat
sims using the Infinity Engine.

WT!?!

Sacred is only a 2 character choice game!?

Diablo has 3 characters.. 5 if you include the 2 from its add-on 'Hellfire',
and I can't seem to find it. <:(

Then, by your reasoning, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are hardly RPGs too, Poly,
because they have the same engine as the Icewind Dales.

Um no. Fallout is a RPG right? Fallout Tactics is a combat sim strategy
type game utterly without any RPGing. They use the same engine. Just
because two games use the same engine doesn't mean they are the same
genre. I said that even though they (BG and IWD) use the same engine,
they aren't the same kind of game. Pay attention!

Yeah, Unreal and Wheel Of Time use the same engine, but WOT is more of
an RPG than Unreal, certainly.

There are 6 in the original game:

Gladiator, Battle mage, Seraphim, Vampiress (my choice), Dark elf, another
elf. I can see how Poly reckons the remaining 5 as variants of elves.

The underworld expansion adds 2: Demon and Dwarf.

Sacred is not an RPG in the way that Ultima, Baldur's gate, PS:T or
Morrowind are RPGs. There are RPG elements like advancement, and you can
to a certain degree decide how you character develops. But my vampiress
does not become an alter persona the way it IMO is possible in the other
games mentioned.

It's just mindless fun. Sometimes I like that, especially when when I
can't give gaming my undivided attention.

One might argue that the RPG label is misleading - perhaps we should in
stead call it an AAWLA (action-adventure with leve advances).
But it's not different from the Diabloids in that respect. I suppose
action RPG is the term we have to stick with.
