I am a noob to overclocking gpus. I have a r9 270x and when I overclock it about 100 mhz i get a ten to twenty fps boost in bf4, but i soon get a bluescreen and crash. What is a safe overclock for this card that I can use as a starting point?

Solution
The OC ranges for everyone, run MSI afterburner while you do this. If it overheats it shuts down, OCing increases heat, so you likely cant handle the heat.

Can i use msi afterburner with a gigabyte card?

No i really dont think its overheating. I had the same problem because i couldnt increase the gpu to the voltage it had needed so i flashed its bios and voilla. Runs smooth at almost 1300 core and 1550 memory. Overheating with only 100mhz increase is unlikely unless you didnt increase yor fan speed.

just a quick question that I got since im also a noob at this but... what was ur psu wattage? What was your power limit, core voltage, and fan speed with that overclock?

I got a sapphire r9 270x 2gb card and max i seem to get to without having crashes is 1070 core and 1400 memory... with a 700watt psu

Try upping your voltage a bit in afterburner, increase it by the smallest increment possible and then try gaming, every time it crashes up the voltage again by the smallest amount possible until it will run stable without overheating.

Keep in mind, this post is for those who ARE NOT having issues with heat.

i can barely overclock my msi R9 270x gaming!!
the maximum i can get is 1160mhz, if i go above my game crashes or i get a blue or red screed of death...
really unlucky with my card

Did you increase the power limit by 20%? I did that on msi's afterburner, i managed to get 1180mhz core/1400mhz memory (stable), but i will get blue screen if i set it on 1190 on core, i gues that's my limit mine is the standard msi r9 270x gaming series 2gb

intersting thread. i have an msi r9 270x twin frozr 4gb OC gaming edition, my memory stock is at 1400 and the gpu is at 1080. i have tweaked the fan control to go from 60% at 50c, to 100% at 70c as i googled that 70c is a good safe upper limit.
is it worth trying to OC this further? i'd like some real good performance out of this card especially on the gpu to utilise the 4gb memory in the future.
and how are you testing if its stable, just in games or does msi Kombustor do a good enough job?
i ran a few things on Kombustor last night, temp never went beyond 50c at 100% load, and good high fps. unfortunately i do not own many games yet to really test it, dayz wouldn't count as its got issues with ati and nvidia cards anyway

if its not overheating or anything, then thats the limit, and yea i also noticed if i oc the memory from stock (1400mhz) to 1550mhz i get like 0.1 fps boost only, is it normal?

i dont think its a good idea to leave the fan speeds at 100%, i have no knowledge on that, but it might decrease the lifespan of the fans...just my guess im really not sure on this, as in temps, at stock or oc mode (1120/1400), on furmark i get like 84 degrees, but in games it was like 74-75degrees at most, fan speed by default was like about 32% or so. then aftr my oc i made my own custom fan curve (yes can be done in msi afterburner) so in furmark with my 1180/1400 oc i still get 84 degress ,fan speed was like 44% (still stock fan curve, i didnt edit it yet) , but in games.......67 degress at most, even unigine heaven 4.0, i left it running for 1hr 10mins i get max temps 67 degrees, fan speed according to the custom fan curve i have set was 32-35%,

and for the stability test, kombustor is okay, furmark is the extreme one, let it run for 20-30mins you should reach the max temps, but me personally id go with unigine heaven 4.0 since it puts realistic strain on the gpu just as normal games go, and i let mine run for 1hr 10mins seems fine, no crashes or blue screens, and well im still testing my overclock actually since my gpu is fairly new (about 2 weeks), testing as in games, so if i get any bsod then i reply here then.
as in safe temps, well by default even with furmark running ( i ran the card on oc mode...1120/1400) it maxes out at 82 degrees. so i guess anything within 82 degrees is fine, by since i like em cool, i adjusted the fan curve
hope this helps., cheers!!!..... =)

good sir, how do you flash the bios of ur gpu? im running an msi r9 270x with a 600w psu... is this enough or not?

Mind sharing where do you get the custom bios from, and link me any tutorials, i really am interested to give it a go, thank you. And btw i can't unlock my voltage in msi afterburner, I'm using the msi r9 270x gaming edition 2gb

if you want to unluck your voltage you need a hawk series of cards,
here is the latest bios fille: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/148841/msi-r9270x-2048-131105.html
and use this program to flash it: http://www.overclock.net/t/1353325/tutorial-atiwinflash-how-to-flash-the-bios-of-your-ati-cards

dont forget to make a backup of your previos bios!!!! use gpu-z for a bakup

tnx... how hard is this to do? am i in a position to mess it up?

not so hard i did it in a few minuts
and if you mess it up( black screen), just shut down the computer, lockate the bios switch on the gpu, shitch it to the other side and restart your pc
