Safe Temperature for my X800GTO AGP

Ok, so if you've read any of my posts, you know recently I've acquired an X800GTO AGP card by Sapphire.

I've been using ATItool to OC it, and with some good results.. I can get it to around 430 - 435 CORE with no artifacts, but I am afraid of it running too hot.

I brought the clock down to 418 and played some Half Life with ATItool measuring the temp eveyr 10 seconds.... I seem to be hovering in the 70 - 73 degree range after a solid hour, and I am wondering if that is too hot???

I mean I don't need this card to last 5 years... so if it's just the life of the GPU, I can sacrifice to a point... but if there is any danger of hurting the card at that temperature, I would like to know...

Is 80 degrees the danger zone? Or, what IS the danger zone?

Well im not sure about safe zone

Mine is clocked a lot higher a 530mhz, at idle it is 50c, full load hits 67c im guessing if your talking celcius as well your cooler isnt doing to well.

Im using a stock cooler Connect3d so its nothing special yet it copes well with my big overclcok.

I would push the card harder you may not even see much of a increase in temps the x800gto should easily get passed 430, also if your whole case is hot inside its going to push the card temps up.

The ambient temp is pretty low.. which I guess is a GOOD thing... but I mean if I am hitting 71 - 72, I just want to make sure I am not going to damage it.

HOWEVER - I do agree with you about the temp staying around the same even OC'd...

The card obviously has a built it temp to fan speed control, but like ATItools does.. if the card is at X degrees the fan runs at X speed... and since I don't think the fan speed has hit 100, I think the card has been fine. I mean, I doubt Sapphire is dumb enough to make a card that would burn itself out without the fan going 100% - but I can't bank on that.

When I had it overclocked even MORE it didnt run much hotter....

I have lowerd my ati tool fan speed temps a fair bit at stock settings it was cutting in way too late for me.

I would say 80c is the safe barrier I wouldnt go any higher than that but If the oc was good enough I would be happy around those temps after a day of gaming.

Turn your fan speeds up see how much it helps, as i said ati tool was well off for my tastes when ut came to fan speed and temps.

ahh so like set it to kick it at 100% sooner?

like

50 degrees - 54% (seems to be standard for my fan)
60 degrees - 60%
65 degrees - 65%
70 degrees - 70%
73 degrees - 80%
75 degrees - 90%
78 degrees - 100%

yeh I have mine set to hit 100% at 60c (noise doesnt bother me) and staggered before that, try it you may find it helps a lot.

Spooky, I was going to post an almost identical question this morning.

I've got the X800 GTO FireBlade PCIe. I had it overclocked to 550/550 until last week but decided to try for more (I think you should try for a lot more, despite not knowing if the AGP cards OC as well as the PCIe cards). I upped it to 575/575 and all seems well.

I have my fan, with ATI TOOL setup, running at 100% all the time. Don't want to chance anything. Noise doesn't bother me.

But I, too, am wondering if 70 C after a few hours is too high ... after returning to Win XP, within a minute it's back down to about 37-38 C.

Anyone want to add anything?

I am getting worred.

Yesterday for my birthday, I got a new game, "The Movies" that shouldn't be the most graphically involved game.

However, after playing it, I am getting some REALLY high temps here, and I am getting worried... Here is an example:

You can see the enviroment temp is ALWAYS the same, but the temperature of the GPU is ABOVE 75 degrees! Holy geez, is that waaaaay too hot?

For now I am going to reclock back down to stock 🙁 and see where it goes...

Mid 70s is still safe. Don't worry, nothing will happen. If the temps go into high 80s, then you should start worring.

I was thinking of keeping the fan at MAX 100 degrees all the time as well, I don't really mind the noise... but I bet it will mess with the life of the fan....

OR is it best just to set it try and always keep the temp at 70 degrees, so it will go 100% if it goes past that.

Just found out ONE of the problems.

I looked at my setup, and found that somehow my old powersupply and slipped between the computer and my computer case, and was resting RIGHT on the NEW powersupplies fan output on the back of the computer. I am SURE this has a lot to do with why the ambient temp was up to 59degrees celcius.

I've opened the computer, pulled it out of the case, and took off the side of the case, and got the temp at a nice cool 42 degrees... but then again I a writing this... so it should be cool.

Ok I will stop freaking unless it gets over 80.

Well, I've seen cards that get into the 90s and work fine, but I wouldn't be trying thigs like that.

Yah I mean, I am not worried about lessening the life of the GPU, mostly just making sure it doesnt burn up on me in the next few years! ha ha ha!

I know I'm usually concerned about what I think are high temps, but I like to keep full GPU loads at or below 60C. Simple reason, for overall temp in the case, since the HSF I used doesn't exhaust heat outside. Case fans do that job.

Using the Zalman VF700, to cool my 6800GS, seems to keep temps at 59-60C under full GPU load (3dmark benchies). Moderate gaming 52-53C.

I know this is about the X800GTO AGP, but my 6800GS AGP has a fixed 'Core Slowdown Threshold' of 120C.

I can't change it, since it's fixed to 120C.. :lol:
Does that ATI software have that?

And is it safe to think 70-90C maybe okay on the GPU, but perhaps hinder other cooling for the over temp of the case?

Just wondered what you guys think.. 😀

My non overclocked 6600gt runs at 74 after playing battlefield 2 demo for about 15 minutes, so Id say 73 is good. A good question to ask is how much are you getting from overclocking and increasing your temp? Is it worth it?
