Is it safe to carry Laptop in sleep mode in vertical position in a backpack regularly when driving? Will there be any damage to the hardware components in the long run?

No, it is completely safe to carry it while in sleep mode.

If you have an SSD in that laptop, then even powered up there is no damage probable. An SSD has no moving parts, so it is much more durable in a laptop.

The only caveat is if the laptop wakes up for some reason, but I'm pretty sure by default if the laptop is not plugged in, Windows basically ignores soft alarms. However, if you want to make sure that your laptop doesn't stay on for very long, you can always set a shorter "go to sleep when idle" timer.
