Is it safe to defrag my hard drive with XP? Someone told me a long time ago that defrag is bad for some reason but I install and uninstall programs frequently and in large quantities, so I need to free up that memory.

Thanks!

Yes ... it is safe.

Keeping the files contiguous on the hard drive actually saves wear and tear on the actuator arm, prolonging the life span of the device.

But ... there are definitely much better utilities available on the market for this purpose, with speed and capabilities that far exceed Window's built-in defragmentation program, such as ...

I defrag in XP. But not in Win9x, it seems that everytime i defrag in 9x nothing had happen afterwards.

Keeping the Win 98 OS "defragged" helps performance immensely but better use a utility; like those previously mentioned or Nortons speed disk. There are of course other tools too.
