I have a LCD monitor that has gone bad. Beyond salvation. Everything is orange and dim. Its replacement is already in service.

Is it safe to disassemble the old LCD monitor? I'd do it just for fun, just to see what it looks like inside. Any power supplies or caustic chemicals I need to worry about?

The LCD screen is sealed. There are no hazardous chemicals that I know of. Older monitors are much easier to get apart than newer ones. I'd guess that the power supply and circuitry are fine.

Old CRT's can be very dangerous, due to the evacuated nature of the tube and the aquadag, if its turned on. LCD's don't have those issues.

It is safe in most cases. I have repaired plenty of monitors and LCD televisions as contract work. You may be able to repair it if you can figure out what the problem is. I usually just had the company send me the parts after they had diagnosed it over the phone, but usually it was one of two parts that needed replacing: the mainboard or the power board.

However, all of the models I fixed either didn't have a picture when you turned on the television/monitor or wouldn't even power on, so regretfully I can't advise you where to start looking when you get inside.
