I have a 21.5 inch iMac and I am going to put in on a table that will be 18 feet (already added a extra feet or two to the rough measure meant to make sure I have enough extra) away from my UPS what kind of extension cable do I need to buy for it to be safe?

Solution
NEVER daisychain a power strip off of an extension cord. Not only is it a fire hazard, it's also a potential shock hazard. It also violates every fire code in existence.

I'm pretty sure that all of the UPS manufacturers state that power strips and extension cords are not to be used with their products.

Any run of the mill cable will be fine.

Would it not be recommended to have a small power strip at the end of the extension from the UPS powering only the iMac and a small LED table lamp?

Get an extension cord and then at the end plug a power strip in it to which you then connect whatever you want. This doesn't need to be a surge protected power strip as the ups already does that.

As long as you don't overload the extension, like plugging 10 things to it + coffee pot, like mentioned, any ole will do, iMac is nothing special as far as power goes. A power strip is a convenience item because you will often end up needing power near the iMac, like an external drive, a scanner, start to add USB devices and all of a sudden you are in need of a powered USB hub blah-blah.
