Safely using an ATX psu repeatedly with no mb?

I've read you can test an ATX power supply by shorting pins 14 & 15 of the mainboard connector.
I've also read that this can damage the power supply eventually because the atx spec calls for a ttl circuit to pull pin 14 low.

How can I use my atx power supply often and for a few hours at a time, without a mainboard and without damaging it?

See if it will fire with a diode. If not forget about it, just short the two.
