Hi,

really easy one for most of you i bet but what the hell are all these
(same as parent folder) entries in my forward lookup zone? In the
books I've read I've learnt about pointer records, alias, host
etc...but nowhere has it been mentioned that DNS gets flooded with
(same as parent folder) entries..or in fact why.
I mean the folder up a level from the forward lookup zone is the
folder called "Forward Lookup Zones", in which the only folder is my
forward lookup zone. Where is this "parent folder" of which it speaks,
and what's its relevence?


Just for the sake of doing it I'm going to say it again... (same as
parent folder)(same as parent folder)(same as parent folder)(same as
parent folder).

Now, can someone tell me what on earth it's all about please? :0)

I don't know if you are serious, but I will assume you are. (same as parent
folder) exists because it is better than "jr".

OK, that was not clear. (same as parent folder) means THE SAME NAME AS THE
PARENT NAME. The Parent here is Foward Lookup Zone (abc.blah). Every record
created underneath abc.blah is considered a child of the abc.blah family
tree, and is, therefore appended to abc.blah.

Consider this. When you create a "www" A record in abc.blah, you don't
create the record as www.abc.blah, you just go in there and created "www".
Now because www was created under abc.blah, we now celebrate and call the
new sibling www.abc.blah.

Some people think that the www part of a URL is what makes the URL a
website. Of course, we know that's not true. If we want people to be able to
reach www.abc.blah by simply using abc.blah, we would create a (you guessed
it) )"same as parent folder" record that point to the same IP that our www
record points to.

You create a (same as parent folder) by simply creating a A (Host) record
and leaving the first line blank. Now, as to this part of your question:

Could you define "flood"? If you are really getting flooded, you may be
having other problems beside "same as parent". Or, are you referring to the
fact that all the Nameservers responsible for this abc.blah zone are
registering their records with "same as parent"?

If you have a zone in your DNS named "microsoft.com", the (same as parent folder) record is "microsoft.com".

I think the 'flooding' is because he has numerous domain controllers and we
all know that the netlogon service will register this blank domain FQDN
(also called the LdapIpAddress) for AD domain communication, to actually
identify the DCs.


Just to point out for T0GGLe, this is essential when it comes to DFS and
applying GPOs because the GetGpoList function from the client side
extensions when it looks for GPOs to be applied to the machine, will query
for this record:

\\domain.com\sysvol\domain.com\policies\{ThePolicy'sLongGuidNumberHere}


T0GGLe,
Notice \\domain.com at the beginning of the UNC? DNS is queried to resolve
that. The answer is the LdapIpAddress, or the (same as parent) IP address.

Don't alter or delete these.
