Mobo - Asus Sabertooth 99 - 2 SSD's with Win 10 Pro 64 build 1703. Must update bios. Does the Intel suggestion work?
 
Solution
Updating the BIOS generally removes and settings and custom configuration.
If this RAID was set up in the BIOS, that config is probably lost, and would need to be reenabled.

Solution:
Full backup of the RAID array
Update the BIOS
Enable the RAID config in the BIOS
Import the data back in.

You should ALWAYS have a known good backup, no matter what you're doing.

Rarely are things "identical".

Mobo - Asus Sabertooth 99 - Bios in 2016
OS- Win 10 Pro 64 on Raid mirror (two 250GB Samsung SSD's)

The bios must be updated in order to update NVidia GTX970 as well as Win 10 from 1703 to 2004. (please don't tell me the bios does not require update)

A 2017 thread mentioning this issue (updating a bios on a raid OS and losing boot drive) and that an Intel forum mentioned that the SSD's can be disconnected, the bios then flashed and reconnected after setting updated bios to raid.

My question is , did that work and is there another way to prevent the loss of the OS after flashing a bios.
