Same channel or not

Ive run an Ethernet cable from the house router to the WAN port on another router in our shop, which has metal siding on it, because we can't get signal out there. My question is, do you have to have both routers on the same channels for them to work right?

No. You want the two routers on different WIFI channels or both set to "auto". If you have media or other shared devices in the house that you want to be able to access from the worksthop, then using the router as an access point rather than a router is the proper thing.
