Same-generation CPU, better clock speed: worth upgrading?

Hello,

I've been using for a few years an HP Z400 gen2 (w/ triple-channel memory) for gaming.

The current setup is:

Xeon W3520 processor
12 gb PC3-8500 recently "amplified" but downgraded from 6gb PC3-10600. Current processor can only work at 1066 anyway.
GPU: Radeon R9-270, 2GB
On the DX12 3dmark benchmark, I get something between 1500-1600 on the three tests.

I am well aware that this is a workstation, not a gaming rig, but I play at 1080p and don't plan on changing that anytime soon; no overclocking, as my PSU is just sufficient (the 600w custom version is a rare find!) to get everything working.

The machine is giving me satisfying results for my three main titles:
Fallout 4 (high settings on autodect; I have some framerate drops in the more dense areas of the map, but since my memory addition, I remain within playable frequencies)
Civ 6 (I would appreciate shorter intervals between turns);
Dark souls 3

The question: would it be worth it to upgrade my CPU to something like a W3570? The documentation I found on the z400 doesn't mention the possibility of a W3580, but would it work?

In any case, would the higher clock speed improve my experience (esp. in Fallout)?

In doing so, would going back to 1333 memory yield some additional results?

My goal is to keep this machine playing correctly as long as possible; would it be noticeably better with a 500-800mhz faster processor than what I currently use?

Thank you for your advice.

Agree. That would be a good upgrade. You might research if your system is compatible with a later family processor like Westmere EP. (may require BIOS change)

I went from W3565 to X5687 in this Dell T3500 workstation and saw a very nice boost in performance with significant less heat.
Upgrading from the 20 to 70 would yield around 20% increase in performance. Considering the W3570 only seems to cost 40£, I think it's worth upgrading. Your GPU is also quite weak, you should upgrade to an HD 7970.

If I remember well, at the time of buying, the r9 270 was the most powerful GPU I could get considering that my system (featuring a non-replaceable PSU) wouldn't accommodate anything more demanding than 150w. As it is compatible with DX12, I think I'll coast on that card until I replace the whole machine.

Hmm, not sure my level of tech-savviness allows me to wander beyond the processors mentionned in the HP-provided documentation, which only mentions the w- series xeons; I did find a Z400 featuring a W3580, but none with a x-series... I would love the better TDP, though!

EDIT : I think I found the answer; that greatly increases the number of possibilities: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/HP-Z400-CPU-upgrade/td-p/5048908

Thanks!
