Samsung 256gb 950 pro m.2 ssd

Hi everyone,

I've been looking to buy mentioned m.2 ssd for my z97-pro motherboard and I have some questions.

First of all, in z97-pro manual it says that the m.2 port/socket is socket 3, and after I've read some articles I found out that it means the mobo doesn't utilize the ssd fully. However I was thinking of buying it and when I upgrade mobo i could get full speed from it.

Is it possible to install windows onto the m.2 ssd? And if it is, is it possible to divide/part that leftover space to another drive for other use? I really am new to this m.2 connection/thing.

M.2 is first of all a size format spec.
It is tiny, like a stick of gum.
It is very good for a laptop.
Yes, you can install windows on a m.2 ssd.
The interface is what determines the maximum sequential transfer speed.
There are bandwidth limitations of a Z97 chipset, and I think your sequential speeds may be limited, perhaps to 1gb/s.
The full capability is more like 2.5gb/s.
I changed from a 500gb 850 pro to a 950 pro at full speed.(my son wanted my 500gb 850 pro) To be honest, I did not see much difference except for faster virus scans. And, I did not like the mounting under the graphics card.
low queue latency is hardly changed.
My suggestion is to use a more conventional 850 evo. 850 pro will perform similarly but have longer endurance.
20 years vs. 15, a moot point.
I would not try to do any partitioning.
It is much easier and more efficient to just let windows manage a single space.

If you are looking to the future, the Xpoint optane devices will be what you want.
