tried searching for this particular problem, not easily found

I have SLI MSI gtx 970's hooked up to an ASUS 1080p 144 hz moniter through the DVI port

Im trying to concurrently hook up the card directly into my Samsung HU9000 4k TV through its HDMI2/DVI port via the 970 HDMI port.

Both the monitor and TV are recognized by Nvidia control panel...but for some reason the TV isnt picking up the signal?

Ive renamed the port to PC....Ive turned on UHD color....Ive tried turning both pc and tv on and off...

Is there something im missing? Can i not have the monitor and TV hooked up at the same time with gtx970? How can i get an image displayed on the TV?

Any help would be appreciated.

Solution
If youre running windows 7 go into control panel, adjust screen resolution, and try setting monitors to duplicate display. Your case may be troublesome because you are connecting a card to two displays with different resolutions. You may only be getting 1080p on the tv, but I cant speak on that since I connect to two 1080p displays.

Hm. The monitor's native resolution is 1080p.

So you are saying that since my monitor's resolution cannot be set higher....there is no way to have the monitor hooked up and have the 4k tv display at a higher resolution than 1080p?

I dont really want to be running both displays at the same time, i just simply want to keep both the monitor and tv hooked up at the same time, and be able to switch back and forth.

There is no way to have both ports connected and switch back and forth?

I don't exactly know how different resolutions work but I'd think it would default to the highest, but the problem of the tv not recognizing the signal is the largest at hand. First of all make sure to try all the ports on both the tv and card (I had that problem when my monitor wasnt picking up the displayport signal). Then update the drivers and see if you can update the tv's software. And rule out faulty cables. If everything is working properly the tv should just be displayed as another monitor.

Solution
According to your 3rd sentence, you have HDMI converted to DVI or the other way around? Instead of converting, why not just buy a HDMI 2.0 cable and connect straight from HDMI to HDMI? But then again that different resolution problem could still be there, I have seen quite a few threads about issues with hooking up different resolution displays together.

No, no converter.

I have an HDMI 2.0 cable running from the HDMI 2.0 port of the gtx 970 card...straight into the HDMI port of the Samsung 4k tv.

I have a DVI cable running from the DVI port of the gtx 970 card leading into my ASUS PC monitor.

Two ports connected, two different cables. Both Monitor and TV are recognized by Nvidia on the PC.

Maybe the previous poster is correct that the TV wont display a signal because the moniter is at a different resolution than the TV....but if the PC is geared to output the greater resolution, why does my monitor output a signal instead of the TV? Even though i have the TV selected as my display of choice?

Nevermind then, but yeah, that could most likely be the problem. Which is why I usually like to make everything match up as much as possible, I haven't seen a thread with someone that can fix this different resolution with multiple displays issues yet. Perhaps in the future :)

Yes. I tried unlugging my monitor from the DVI port...and still no signal on the TV through the HDMI.

Do i need to boot fresh to get the PC to recognize it? need to do something with the Samsung 4k to recognize it?

Ok so i unhooked the Monitor all together and just had the 2.0 HDMI running from the GTX 970 card to the Samsung TV HDMI port...still no signal. Wether i tried booting the TV first or the TV first.

Tried different HDMI ports on the TV as well.

Is there a handshake step im missing? Do people hooking up GTX970/980 cars ever have an issue hooking up to this samsung 4k tv?

Just wondering if there is a setting under windows or on the TV that im missing...or is it just like hooking up a cable box to the tv, as soon as i hook up a turned on PC to my tv it should read a signal automatically?

So in case anyone else runs into similar problems....2 things.

1.) Current HDMI 2.0 cables are not all the same. I went through 3 different cables and cable companies before i found one that would actually transmit a signal 4k at 60mhz with deep color on.

Even if these high speed 18gbps cables transmit 1080p or 1080i cable box signals no problem....didnt matter. They would not connect and send data from the graphics card to the Tv the same way. They appear to function until you need them to function full speed.

I eventually found a 2.0 cable that sent the signal 4k resolution at 60/hz with deep color on.

So eventually it was the lack of a properly working cable between gtx and samsung 4k

2.) Even with a functioning cable, the other poster is right in that you could not have one moniter transmitting at one resolution and the tv at another.

Thanks for the help!

MSI GTX 970

iiyama 1080p Gaming Monitor on DVI(GFX) - DVI (Monitor)

Samsung TV UE48JS8500 DVI(GFX) - HDMI(port2)(TV)

monitor is in 1080P 120hz

TV is in 4k at 60hz

i had to switch DVI ports on GFX card to get 60hz otherwise it was only 30hz with UHD colour on TV.

you can have different Resolutions on two displays.
and at different hz refresh rates.

using a DVI(gfx) - HMDI Lead
