Hello Toms!

I have had my new build for roughly a month now and am absolutely loving it but I am having some major concerns regarding my SSDs S.M.A.R.T. values. This is my first SSD and as such I am not entirely sure how important/accurate these values are so really I am just looking for some reassurance.

Samsung Magician shows that my 840 Evo has written a total of 0.73 TB but already has a Wear Leveling Count of 2 (Raw Data) and has had 24 POR Recovery Counts. I have no idea what the POR is but am I right in saying that once the Wear Leveling Count hits 100 the drive will die? If so, isn't 2/100 a bit extreme for a months use?

Thanks yet again for your help,
Conor 🙂

Solution
It does not include the performance restoration software, it is a completely separate patch. The Samsung Magician works with many models of Samsung SSDs, the patch is for 840 EVO models ONLY.

ID # 177 Wear Leveling Count

This attribute represents the number of media program and erase operations (the number of times a block has been erased). This value is directly related to the lifetime of the SSD. The raw value of this attribute shows the total count of P/E Cycles.

Each MLC NAND cell can be erased ~10,000 times before it stops reliably holding charge.

Power Recovery Count
A count of the number of sudden power off cases. If there is a sudden power off, the firmware must recover all of the mapping and user data during the next power on. This is a count of the number of times this has happened.

Make sure the firmware is up to date and that the performance restoration software has been installed.

There is no possible way to have degraded the drive in a month. It would take years and years of normal writing unless there is a hardware issue with the drive itself. Any hardware can be faulty on many levels. Install the newest firmware if it's not already and install the performance patch if it's not already. If that fails to help, check to see that your motherboard BIOS is completely up to date. I've already seen five Samsung 840 EVOs this week with issues that were resolved by updating the BIOS.

Hey darkbreeze,
I already have the latest version of Samsung Megician 4 installed, I assume that includes the performance restoration software. I also know I have the latest BIOS update.

I don't have a problem or fault with the drive per say, I was just curious as to whether a Wear Leveling Count of 2 and a POR Recovery Count of 24 after ~ a months use is high?
