I am looking to add a 120 or 250 gb version of the Samsung 840 evo to my desktop build.

I saw they offer these drives in normal SSD form and an msata version.

I also saw on passmark that the performance scores for the msata version of the 120 gb version is roughly 25% better than normal SSD version, and its ranking is is 27 while the normal disk is 145. In fact the performance score even outdoes the 850 Pro 128 gb disk and its ranking reflects that as well.

I thought that msata was a lower end form of SSD's. If this little device is giving such good results is it something I should consider for my desktop machine or would I be better served by the normal 840 evo?

Also could I stick one of these on a motherboard msata slot and run my OS off it or is that strictly for the cache?

Thank you.

Where are the Read/Write speeds? I guarantee you the msata falls behind there. Just looked at Samsung 830 vs Samsung 840 EVO. Clearly this is misleading data. That info makes it seem the 830 is wayyy better than the 840 EVO. ha.

As mentioned, we all buy for performance and no one uses msata for a reason. It could be great for laptops but not for desktops.

Yup, http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd_list.php

Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB Rating 3631 Rank 145
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB mSATA Rating 4893 Rank 27
Samsung SSD 850 PRO 128GB Rating 4108 Rank 58

In fact if you look at all the benchmarks for the msata Samsung drives, they all win.

Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB Rating 4088 Rank 61
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 1TB mSATA Rating 4481 Rank 34
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB Rating 3995 Rank 76
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB mSATA Rating 4601 Rank 30
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB Rating 4195 Rank 48
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB mSATA Rating 6356 Rank 14

This doesn't seem right!
