Samsung 850 EVO 1TB (M.2 form factor) - Release and availability dates?

So what is your friend going to be doing with it ? Is the friend using software that requires constant fast access to data such as video editing or something like that ? If the answer is yes, then go ahead and wait.

You do know it uses the same controller as the SATA version and isn't any faster. Good choice for a laptop or somewhere space is a premium though.

+anort3 Agreed, M.2 and 2.5" versions of the 850 EVO are the same speed. She wants the cleaner look and "cool factor".

+USAFRet Funny you should mention the performance difference between SATA III and NVMe. My friend originally wanted the Samsung 950 Pro 500 GB (M.2) but I informed her of the negligible difference between the two in normal uses. I suggested the 850 EVO 1TB, so that she could get twice the capacity for roughly the same price.

The 950 pro is amazing if you can actually make use of all the speed. I got one more because I needed a new boot drive and I was upgrading the CPU, motherboard and RAM anyway and it fit my budget.

134GB Steam folder from my 512GB 950 Pro to my 500GB 840 Evo = 4 minutes
Same folder from the 840 Evo to a WD 640GB Black HDD = 33 minutes

SATA II or III doesn't mater much to a HDD in fact it only increases transfer speed because it can send burst info faster from the cache I do believe. I know it was the HDD write speed that was the bottleneck just like the 840 Evo write speed was the bottleneck in the first transfer. Still 134GB transferred in 4 minutes was amazing.
