I was debating either going to the Motherboard or Storage forum but decided to post here.

I recently bought the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD. Fresh installed Windows 10 & enabled AHCI mode. Installed most of my drivers and programs.

Then I installed the Magican software for the SSD, and it says I'm not using a SATA 3 port.

According to my motherboard: the Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 (rev. 1.3), supports SATA 3 and all of them should be SATA 3 ports. Am I missing something? Should they be in specific ports? Currently the SSD is in port 0, and my 1TB drive is in port 1.

Also I tried to update the software for my SSD, and it keeps saying has failed or something like that.

Thanks ~ RadicalScrub

Hey there, RadicalScrub!

Honestly, it seems like you've set up everything perfectly! However, I'd still recommend you to make sure you have the updated drivers for your mobo from the manufacturer's website. You should be able to find all the needed drivers under Support & Downloads.
Another thing that could be causing this is a faulty SATA cable, so I'd suggest you to change it and see what the SSD utility will show then.
I can see from the utility that you don't have the latest firmware update for your SSD ( http://www.storagereview.com/how_to_upgrade_samsung_ssd_firmware ).
You mentioned that you're failing to upgrade the software, were you referring to the firmware update?

Keep me posted. Hope this helps. :)

Yep it was one of the SATA cables. Switched the SATA cable with one of my others one and it changed to SATA 3 on the Magican software. I now get my advertised speeds of 540 MB/s read speed!

Also yes the firmware update. I actually have no clue how to fix that too, but my SSD is working right now so I don't think its that big of a deal. Thanks!

Hi again, RadicalScrub!

I'm glad to hear that you've resolved the transfer rate and SATA III issues! :)
However, you should consider contacting your SSD manufacturer's customer support and let them know about your issues regarding the firmware update. I don't think it's that big of a deal at the moment either, but better be safe than sorry.

Best of luck with everything!
Cheers,
