[SOLVED] Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD drive is performing poorly on benchmark test, to the point where it asks if it is plugged in.

Hi all,

This is my first post here. I just built my first ever gaming PC. Things have been pretty rocky, but I finally got the PC up and running. I was skeptical of my build as it was my first time doing this, so I decided to do some benchmark tests. I used UserBenchMark and got some concerning results:

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/26028271

As you can see, it's asking if my Samsung 860 EVO SATA drive is even plugged in. It is, and I've tried plugging it into different ports on the MOBO and have gotten the same results. I've run every test there is on the Samsung Magician app and it says there is nothing wrong with the drive. This prompted me to run out and get a Samsung 970 EVO M.2 drive and install it. It's installed and you can see the results here. I really don't know much about computers/hardware, but aren't those Read/Writes on both of these SSDs coming up very low?

Do you guys have any suggestions for fixing this? I bought the M.2 SSD so that I could benchmark it and, if in proper working order, start from scratch by installing Windows on it as the boot drive and see what kind of results I get.

Also, I know these benchmarks aren't necessarily the final authority on how your PC is performing, but why is my GPU performing so poorly? I have the GeForce Experience application and it is recent on all updates. Is there anything else I can troubleshoot?

Thanks.

Solution
It's not asking if it's plugged in, it's asking if it's in a SATA3 (vs. SATA2) port. Your board only has SATA3 ports but make sure the negotiated speed is correct - check CrystalDiskInfo.

Hi guys,

Thank you for the replies. I actually went ahead and yanked the 860 SATA SSD drive and reinstalled Windows from scratch onto the 970 M.2. I know UserBenchMark isn't what I should be basing my assumptions off of, but here are the new results, and they look a whole lot better:

On my previous iteration of Windows I'd installed MOBO drivers for Audio, Chipset and LAN. I haven't done that this time around. Should I go ahead and do it? I also haven't updated the GPU via GeForce Experience this time around. Is there any reason to believe that installing that update was causing the alleged poor performance of my GPU before?

Thank you guys so much.

I'm actually having a very similar output to these benchmark results and just posted a similar thread of my own: https://forums.tomshardware.com/thr...961-and-860-evo-on-asus-prime-z370-a.3596374/

I used the Samsung software to clone my drive from my P961 (which also had issues) onto the 970 Pro, and getting similarly poor results. I might end up having to follow your suggestion and reinstall Windows.... if that fixed it for you..?
