Looking at doing some speed upgrades to my PC, I currently have an intel 520 SSD (purchased in 2012), ASUS VI gene motherboard and Intel 4770k purchased in 2014

After doing some research I want to get an MVMe drive (1tb 970 evo/pro) but I don’t want to upgrade my CPU or motherboard just now. My motherboard doesn’t have a slot for it so is it as simple as just buying a PCI-E express card to m.2 card? I’ve been looking at the SilverStone SST-ECM20 or the SilverStone SST-ECM22

The motherboard does come with a dongle (mPCIe Combo II) but I don’t know if that’s the same thing as I’m after as it says mini pci express 2.0

Love the maximus gene motherboard;
I had one for a long time.

Is there a 870 PRO device as indicated in your title?
I suspect you meant 970 evo/pro.

Read the requirements of the adapter carefully.
For the SilverStone SST-ECM22 it seems that you need a better chipset for the faster nvme pcie operation.
Z87 will not do it.

Also if you intend to use it as a boot device, the motherboard must support that.

I did not check the ECM20 which should be similar.

I might also add that there is only minor performance differences between evo and pro versions.
The PRO version has better endurance which is not worth much on today's large devices.
The evo will be long obsolete before it...
