Question Samsung 990 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe™ M.2 SSD-related question

Asus' Compatible SSD Upgrades page states I can use it with my Asus X99-A II Motherboard, yet its NVMe port is only PCIe 3.0.
Will it just work at PCIe 3.0 speeds or not at all?
Maybe Asus is wrong with this?
